TEST DRIVE - BELLMARE MOUNTAINS

Hello and welcome to Phantasmal Rift's Test Drive Meme!

Test drive threads are assumed to be game canon for accepted characters unless otherwise noted, so don't feel like you'll have to introduce yourself a second time to everyone you meet! As an added bonus, participation in the test drive comes with the chance to earn up to two items of loot for your trouble! Characters who are accepted can earn one item for having a top level, and one for tagging out to someone else's top level! Your SWEET LOOT will be included with your acceptance notice.

Additionally, characters currently in game can earn themselves a piece of bonus loot for the dungeon by tagging people's top-levels on the test drive! Existing characters get their bonus loot along with the rest of their loot at the conclusion of the dungeon.

This test drive takes place in the Bellmare Mountain range, a chilly environment even when it's not locked in the dead of winter. Considering that November is just starting to bite - or is it, with the Fissure's time-displacement effect in place? - that makes for an extremely chilly reception for all of the new arrivals. If you're a person at risk of frostbite, you'd better hunker down in one of the scattered mountain cabins or find someone with extra snow gear, and quick.

Once you're a bit more warmed up, exploration of the area will reveal that it's largely abandoned, but there's still some evidence of past human habitation. Old chair lifts stand guard over untouched ski slopes, the remains of what was once a resort, and a handful of hiking paths twist back and forth through the mountain forests, the snow melting off them due to the magical crystals in the gravel that lines the paths.

LET IT SNOW

Chances are that, upon arriving, you find yourself outside in the snowfall. Hopefully you weren't from somewhere too terribly warm, but chances are that unless you were specifically in a cold environment before, you're going to be feeling the chill now. (Unless, of course, you're not human and don't get bothered by the cold. That happens.)

Fortunately, there are plenty of paths scattered around that are warm enough to keep the snow melted off of them - it shouldn't be that hard to stumble across one. The question then becomes, which way to shelter and civilization? You'll have to take a bit of a gamble, but it's almost certainly better than staying where you are and freezing.

LOCKED IN

How fortunate, then, that you were able to find shelter against the cold - at least for the time being. The wooden cabin is the exact opposite of luxury, but there's a bed and wood to make a fire in the fireplace, so you can't ask for terribly much else. Especially once night falls - or when the snow outside begins to fall in more than flurries - it's far better to be outside than in. Even if you can't figure out how to start the fire, the dimly glowing crystals that serve as fire starter will at least keep your hands warm.

Of course, with only a limited amount of shelter to go around in these mountain trails, it's fairly inevitable that you would have to share with someone... Hope they're friendly, otherwise this place is going to get awkward fast.

FROSTY THE - OH, MAN!

And if you're still running around outside, sooner or later you're almost certain to run into a deep patch of snow that rises up to meet you. These giant snowmen, ten feet tall and aggressive, stand up in response to anything that isn't the local wildlife approaching - and their goal is quite simple. Better watch out, because these guys are your own personal avalanche, seeking to bury you under themselves until either the cold or the weight saps the life out of you.

One's dangerous, but it's not uncommon to find them in groups of 3-5, either, which is where things start getting to be a problem. Luckily, it's possible to melt them down to nothing, or just blast them apart with pure force - the scattered snow won't rise again, at least not any time soon.

[Ho Ho Huh?]

[It doesn't snow in Mainframe. The very idea of snow, even is something she's only heard described as something one might encounter in a Game. So, naturally, the powder is very exciting to a resident of cyberspace.

The red, black, and gold form of Hexadecimal sticks out starkly against the snow, even more so with the way she's excitedly moving around. She seems transfixed by one thing after another, attention shifting erratically from snow bank, to crystal-lined path, even to her own footprints as she notices the crunching sound when she walks.]

What's this? What's this?

[But her confusion doesn't last forever. Instead of curiously investigating, passerby might find her being a little more...attention grabbing. After a remarkably short amount of time investigating the snow, she figures out one of the age old uses for it: snowballs. Anyone nearby is subject to being pelted by snowballs from an impossibly high angle, as Hexadecimal floats in the air and directs snow to rise up and throw itself. It might not come as a complete surprise, however, as she can't help cackling as she rains snowy annoyance from the air.

Or...maybe instead you've found her making snow sculptures, humming as she moves the snow around with a wave of her finger. A particular subject seems to feature heavily in her sculpting, more than occasionally paired with sculptures of herself, depicting the two of them kissing.]

[There's no Place Like Cabin]

[One of these cabins is not like the others. In fact, it looks very different from the others, decked out in red, black and gold paint and in a much more dramatic style. There's smoke drifting from the chimney, though, and the smell of fresh baked cookies wafts out from a door that's been left slightly ajar.

Those who enter find Hex standing at a counter, mixing a bowl of cookie dough while more sit cooling on the counter. She turns at the sound of the door opening, mask showing a delighted smile.]

Ooooh, visitors! Do come in, would you care for a biscuit?

Oh. That's too bad.

[The Shadowchild turns to look at the new arrival, hardly paying attention to the snowman that's still quickly closing in on it. Its eyes go even wider as it looks up at the man and his round purple mount.]

Hi! Who are you? What's your friend?

[The unique cabin certainly got Akira's attention very quickly, needless to say. And with the paint... well, she certainly figured whoever did the redecorating had good taste in colors.

Her expression brightens at the greeting and she closes the door behind her.]

Oh! Ah, yes, please. [She remembers her manners at least. She slips over to the counter, eyes bright. If there's one thing a Wildcard can't resist, it's food...]

[Pidonus just. Pulls Meliantha in to a hug, slowly and carefully.]

It's real. I know it's weird, but it's real. My name is Pidonus, and I'm here to try and help, okay?

Be careful, they're still hot.

[She snaps her fingers, and a cup of sugar lifts off the counter to pour itself into the dough as she mixes it.]

It's so nice to have visitors, though. I was starting to think I wouldn't have anyone to share with.

[Her arm briefly covers her face, and in that short instant, the mask shifts to a dramatic pout.]

It always snows in Terror Mountain

[As a species, the Bori were suited to the cold. Dense fur to keep warm and thick claws to burrow underground.

As a native of the Haunted Woods, though... Boris could feel the decrease in temperature almost instantly.]

What the...? [His ears flattened as he glanced about. A moment ago, he was heading out into town on an errand. Now he's standing in the middle of a snowbank that's way too bright to be anywhere near Neovia.] How the Darigan'd I get to Terror Mountian?!

[This has to be Terror Mountain. No other place in Neopia has this much snow. Nevermind the fact those mountains are bordering the other side of the Woods. As far as Boris knows, some Dark Faeries must be messing with him. Grumbling, he tugs his overcoat closer to his chest and starts following the warmed paths.]

Stupid ruddy little... The locals had better have some kinda cab back home or somethin'...

Locked in. Sort of.

[Unfortunately, Boris has quickly learned this place is too abandoned to be Terror Mountain. Either that, or it's some kinda cursed, abandoned part of the mountain. Either way, he needed a moment to rest up and figure out what the Darigan was going on.

He's managed to secure himself a cabin and start up a fire. Funny, he thought, this place almost felt a little too homely. Not that he's complaining too much. Really, he knows better than to scoff at hospitality of any sort...

His crooked tail curls around his leg as he sits on the edge of the bed, his mind racing for an explanation or at least which kind of faerie to shove his complaints at... If this was even the work of a faerie. What kinda creature teleports Neopets to Fyora-knows-where anyway-

His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the door.]

Hah? [He springs to his feet, ears and head turning to face the poor sap who just walked in.] ... What do you want?!

Look at Frosty go...

[No, Boris did not know what the heck those giant snowmen were supposed to be. He also didn't care, as long as they were easily destroyed by the snow shovel he found in the cabin.]

Grrh! [Whack! Whack! Whack! Down goes the snow monster into haphazard chunks.

He's panting a little as the snow disperses, his tail flicking from side to side as the snow plops to the ground.]
Ruddy nuisance... They're worse than those Faerie-forsaken shadows from the crypts... Tch, what am I saying, anything is worse than those ankle biters...

I'm surprised the cabin didn't get anyone else's attention already for standing out. Was the redecorating your doing?

[She carefully takes a cookie with a pleased hum.]

It was~

[And now her mask is smiling as she sets the bowl of cookie dough down.]

It seemed so drab, I just had to spruce it up a little!

[...It's entirely possible the non-painted floors and rafters look to be made of spruce.]

Let It Snow

We were never supposed to go somewhere this cold, ever again. Why are we here?

[For all his bitching, this dude is riding on the back of some kind of giant ghost head with claws, and thus not even having to walk through the snow at all.]

Can we get any higher? Might be able to spot some shelter from there, and I think you'd be safest flying in this.

Frosty

[There's three of those big snow creatures in this area, but nonetheless it seems like a fairly safe place to be if you've got to be out here. There's a couple of other monsters fighting them. Both seem entirely too small to be going up against ten-foot snow monsters; one is a hot pink beetle, the other looks like a small furry child of some sort, and neither is even as large as the average adult human.

Like, you know, the guy standing off to the side watching and calling out a command every now and then.]

Take them out at the knees!

[What, they know the moves they can use for that]

The area was sparsely inhabited before the fissure opened, I believe. It's not as well preserved as the city was, but it's much better than most of the other fissures have been.

[She smiles a little apologetically, and adds -] Although I suppose if you haven't run into anyone else, I probably sound like I'm talking nonsense, huh?

I can certainly do that. [As soon as Sonja's closed the door behind her and stomped the snow from her boots, she's moving to the woodpile. What. She didn't earn a reputation for being intensely sympathetic to ratly concerns by getting hung up on the fact that someone can fit comfortably under a bed.]

Probably a demon? I'm not sure.

[a; locked in]

[This was a bit of a quandary. He'd been sure this was some kind of failure in Chaldea's technology--after all, that made perfect sense. Ritsuka had been preparing to leave with Jeanne Alter for some holiday thing the pair of them were oddly enthusiastic about.]

[...He'd tried not to ask too many questions at the time, which was beginning to feel like it had been a mistake.Even if this wasn't down to some misstep or accident, he would have quite liked to know what it was. There was next to no available information past 'a cold and snowy climate', and that was excessively frustrating.]

[It was that frustration which led a man in dark colors and a gauntlet to pace the floor of the cabin intently in long steps, so lost in thought that he might not have even noticed anyone else's presence.]

[b; deranged mutant killer monster snowgoons]

[Inefficient.]

[That was the word which continued to surface like a persistent annoyance in Tesla's mind, it was inefficient to fight without a Master as support. Worse yet, it was a waste of energy. Such limits set upon that which should have been limitless, the man who believed himself to be practically lightning incarnate--it was infuriating.]

[What did he look like, Edison?]

[So when faced with a few massive snow monsters, he simply looked annoyed rather than fearful or concerned. No, what stood before him was an inconvenience in the form of snow and ice--a waste of time, energy, and effort that could be better used for a thousand other purposes. These things happened--setbacks in the face of progress. So he merely raised his already sparking gauntleted right hand towards them, and-]

Lightning.

[-with that snapped command, a burst of blue electricity issued forth with the force of a thunderstorm, cracking in the air and destroying the massive snowmen before him.]

You're not exactly here on purpose, if it's any consolation.

[That sure is an interesting friend this guy's got. Akira's gaze is drawn to it for a while as she shifts the egg in her arms. Though, she quickly turns her attention back to Michael.]

... And I can direct you towards shelter, if you'd like. Conditions are only going to get worse, I think.

[ This gets a slightly wry smile. ]

Considering the last time I was pulled off Faerun, I received effectively "nice to meet you, welcome to our huge war" before getting sent out to fight, this is actually much less unpleasant.

[ The Very Large Sword gets put away in a complex motion, and a hand, clad in a heavy gauntlet, is extended. ] Meliantha, no last name I care to use. Perhaps you can give me a summary once we're safer.

[What even is life without pointlessly antagonizing people? Nothing Archer cares to know, that's for sure.]

I'll pass, thank you. Watching you make a mess of the only food easily at hand is enough of a pain in the skull.

[Without fanfare, Archer rescues what Trevor dropped on the floor and starts to arrange things on the counter.]

[Perturbed, Archer glances at her with kind of a put out expression, then just. Ignores the question entirely. He doesn't have a catchphrase, that'd be stupid. It's a perfectly profound observation! Grump.]

You know, I've given you my title, but you've avoided offering me the same.

[Please to not call him Swan, it sounds so... pretty. Ugh.]

What should I call you?

Obviously.

[Okay. So there's at least one Master--he assumes Ritsuka must be his, according to this guy's assumption--and two Servants, he and the man who knows him. Oddly, though, this Servant doesn't seem too interested in killing him, so... an alliance? Well, whatever.

Archer shrugs and stands aside so that Tesla can come in, if he wants.]

And you haven't seen anyone else you know? I've only run across strangers, myself.

Understood. In that case, I'm not sure how something like me can retain its composition in one of these areas of scrambled, uncontrolled magic, as I am constructed almost entirely of magical energy myself. Not that it matters much; it's simply idle wondering.
