[Honestly, Regis has no idea what will happen if he tries. He's in between right now, consciously having released the Ring so it can be taken to Noctis, but not having passed into death so that he can join the rest of the Lucii within it. At the very least, there is little chance the power will lash out at him. The greater possibility is that it will ignore him completely, being he is only one and this deal was set in place by the Lucii as a whole.
