TEST DRIVE 004

Hello and welcome to the fourth test drive for Phantasmal Rift!

Test drive threads are assumed to be game canon for accepted characters unless otherwise noted, so don't feel like you'll have to introduce yourself a second time to everyone you meet! As an added bonus, participation in the test drive comes with the chance to earn up to two items of loot for your trouble! Characters who are accepted can earn one item for having a top level, and one for tagging out to someone else's top level! Your SWEET LOOT will be included with your acceptance notice.

Additionally, characters currently in game can earn themselves a piece of bonus loot for the dungeon by tagging people's top-levels on the test drive! Existing characters get their bonus loot along with the rest of their loot at the conclusion of the dungeon.

This test drive takes place in Keystone Reef, a water-influenced Fissure to the northeast of the station. It is home to numerous fish and coral species, as well as a very interesting magical effect...

OPTION ONE: FINNY FUN

Under the water is where you woke up, and under the water is where you might be stuck for a while. The magic is lodged in you and has changed your form -- maybe a little, maybe a lot. Perhaps you only have gills, but you may also have a full set of changes, fins and no feet to speak of. Don't panic, you'll surely be fine if you just keep swimming...

Aside from the strange changes, it's a pretty cool place to be. If you've ever dreamed about scuba diving on a coral reef, the place that you've found yourself is perfect for that (minus the needing to scuba part). Curious fish swim up and then dart away into rock crevices, coral growths, and even down to bury themselves in the layer of sand at the bottom. The water is also fairly shallow, allowing you to surface if you so desire.

Even the sharks are friendly and just want to have as much a look at you as you want to look at them. Don't harass the glowing eels tucked into cracks between the rocks, though, they bite and don't particularly let go.

OPTION TWO: WORLD'S SMALLEST JUNGLE

This must certainly be an oceanside jungle - in spite of the humidity, the smell of salt on the air is strong. Brilliant greens and the occasional bright flowers, accompanied by island birdsong... It could be a nice place to spend an afternoon. There's not even that many bugs that want to drink your blood (though bugs in general are, well, quite plentiful).

Eventually, though, however far you go, you'll reach the beach and be met with the expanse of the ocean - blue, uncaring, and real big. While one side of the little island thankfully has land visible in the distance, the outer side just overlooks a near-endless expanse of blue. If you're a very good swimmer, you could probably make your way to land past the rocks of the reef itself... Otherwise, though, you might be just a bit stuck on your jungle island paradise.

At least until someone brings a boat.

OPTION THREE: SHIPWRECK

Both above and below the waterline are the remains of ships crashed upon the rocks, just waiting to be explored. Even though it has clearly been an incredibly long time, the chunks of wood and metal are still in fairly good condition, and the chance of finding something nice tucked in with them among the rocks is surely tempting to anyone with an adventurous spirit.

The wrecks beneath the waves also grow coral and seaweed, and provide havens for larger fish, dragon eels, and sharks. Those along the rocks above the waterline, on the other hand, provide a home for seabirds of all varieties. Most notable is the hulking shell of a shipping craft in the distance, looking very much modern if ruined by some centuries of exposure...

For right now, though, you'd best contend with the flotsam a bit closer to you, and the wildlife that might not take too kindly to your exploring. Below the waterline, the dragon eels found in a few places don't take kindly to being disturbed; above, you might run afoul of some overprotective seabirds protecting their nests. Maybe even an invisible seagull (normal sized) - how ridiculous would that be?

[He holds up his hands.] Not me, so don't yell at me about it. Maybe move and it'll stop? Or, I dunno, look? [He sure doesn't seem to be offering to look.]

[ So let it be said, for the record, that Yuuri absolutely does not like being on this mission. She volunteered, yes, because she's not a fool and she isn't going to let any of the people she cares about go running around without some manner of supervision. Or that's what she tells herself – the reality is that imagining herself back on the Station without them and without knowing what's going on makes her stomach turn into a terrified knot.

So she goes on the mission.

Unlike the others, she's not been subjected to any of the weird Fissure alterations. Which is nice, but it means she has absolutely no way of keeping up with them once they're underwater, unless she's out there too, on a boat. And that's where she is now, decked out in a sundress, playing idly with her phone and completely unprepared for Church to come Church-ing up out of the water about five feet from her boat.

Understandably, she very nearly drops her phone when she throws herself to the side so she can see what's causing such a ruckus. And maybe also understandably, she looks a little stunned when she sees just who it is. ]

Wh– Church?!

[Congratulations, you get the full facepalm.]

Not of anyone I can see here, but yes, and, obviously, no.

That's the first thing I did, and there's no one and nothing in here except you and I.

[...wait, what if - ow.]

So either it's you, or some goddamn invisible thing, and one of those ow-

[...that one came from behind her.]

-is the truth and I can't do anything about it.

Jungle

[She doesn't even really notice that she's landed off in another universe at first, mostly because... well, look. Miari is naught but a land filled with delightful beaches of various sand colors, fruit farms, and also, treacherous death jungles. So as far as Nakari knows, she just needs to get back to the group.

She straps her spear to her back and sets to exploring, and actually gets pretty far until she reaches the shore, at which point she realizes that she needs to build a raft.

...where's her machete.

If you see her, she's probably trying to cut a tree down with a spear. Real smart there.]

Shipwreck (CW: Animal injury)

[Once that's settled, she has a grand old time jumping from rock to rock to random piece of rubble in the shipwreck, turning over bits of coral and wreckage with her spear. Things are going pretty well until she accidentally thrusts it too far and hears a faint squawk, but sees nothing.

The squawks start getting more and more desparate, more pained, and she honestly starts freaking out a little?]

[Karamatsu is probably lucky that Spike's remaining gun is waterlogged right now, absolutely useless and probably still in the sediment where he left half his senses before going to find Ein. The dog also prevents much defensive movement from Spike, who instead keeps the whining dog locked in the crook of his elbow while he pedals back in the sand on a bruised hand and long, awkward legs.]

What the fuck?! The fuck is that?!

[Said to the dog, and then to Karamatsu--]

The fuck are you?!

[Ein is no longer sure if he's whining about being frightened himself, or if he's just worried Spike's heart is going to explode.]
moonlightglory: (What are you talking about)

[personal profile] moonlightglory 2018-05-26 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, ocean snakes are totally a thing. Coral snakes, for example... oh shit, that's what the stripe rule is for.

Yeah, that's a Fissure thing. I guess it can affect living things, too, unlike my Zones. [ Well, she can affect plants and things, but you know what she means. ] The last one didn't have anything like this, but I guess it's convenient for a Fissure in the ocean.

Wait, shit, those things swim? I could swear to fuck I've always seen them on dry land.

[And the conversation has now officially been derailed.]

Been in and out of Florida for years now, how the fuck did I not know this?

[ The sound passes through the water farther than through air; as a result, Juliette hears the trouble. She moves, quickly, through the water, and sees the fishy-person fighting three of the eels. She herself has avoided the heck out of them, but now is not the time to let someone else fall prey to them. She begins to sing, and it's quite possible that Tiernan feels a sudden thrill and focus (as a bard using Inspire Courage will have happen). Then as she gets closer, her song reaches a high sharp pitch, and what look to be eighth-notes fly past and slash into the eels. As she gets closer, she says: ]

Beg pardon, but you seem to be in a bit of trouble; can I help?
nor_iron_bars: Alone that soar above (Keep doing what you're doing)

[personal profile] nor_iron_bars 2018-05-26 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Kinda makes you wonder... why's the effect something this convenient? Like, maybe water-based effects in general for something in the water, I could get, but something this specific and useful for everybody I've met here, just from a random magical effect?

Now that's just fucking weird.
blackestwitch: (‡ bitch please)

[personal profile] blackestwitch 2018-05-26 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[ SHE NOTICES YOU DIDN'T ANSWER ABOUT THE TAIL. Which means it's ugly. She's finally fulfilled the lesbian dream of becoming a mermaid and she wound up as an ugly one, great. ]

I know that my Zones seem to work just fine even inside of a Fissure. But I haven't had a chance to really try out what I was looking into yet.
plentyfriendly: (phi$ worry)

[personal profile] plentyfriendly 2018-05-26 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[Okay yeah, that's better. She still has to do the work of actually learning this new body herself, but actually being in a position to do that is just what she needed.]

I would prefer to still have legs, but you work with what you get.
karappo: <user name=bureiku> (I bought a CD)

[personal profile] karappo 2018-05-26 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Mm...I see. So you are a jellyfish mer, then?

[Perhaps the reason he's taking this in such stride is that he's not exactly human right now himself.]
nor_iron_bars: Enjoy such liberty (Default)

[personal profile] nor_iron_bars 2018-05-26 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. Hoping to get 'em back at some point, but I guess I just gotta make do until then.

[For all her lackadaisical attitude, her arm is surprisingly steady. There's muscle there that suggests she's used to doing serious, heavy work.]

On the bright side, at least I get to be all shiny and neat-looking, that's pretty fucking cool.
blackestwitch: (‡ bitch please)

[personal profile] blackestwitch 2018-05-26 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
They seem thematic, at least. The Fissures.

The last one was a forest with mist, and everything inside the mist was kind of dreamlike? Supposedly. And things could be made, shaped, and appear from the mist like in a... what are they called? Lucid dream?

The only really random thing is how Fissures tend to pull in things from other places, and I guess that's constant across all of them.
karappo: <user name=bureiku> (life is too short to consider)

[personal profile] karappo 2018-05-26 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[Immediately and wish almost practiced ease, Karamatsu lifts all four hands in defense, taking a slow step back and away from Spike to put even more space between them.]

Please...try to be calm. I am not going to hurt you. I am not the only monster here at present, and I cannot say for certain all of them will be willing to defend you, so try to keep your voice down.

[Not that Karamatsu knows the mermaids that keep appearing everywhere aren't...exactly permanently like that.]

Heeey!! Hey! Hey!! Leave them alone!!

[ There's a teenage girl rushing up from somewhere down below-deck, wielding a... broom? Old and half broken and kind of moldy from being wet for so long, it nonetheless does a great job of scaring away about half of the birds as she waves it around frantically at them...

And convince the other half to go after her instead. ]
Aaaahhh! No, get back! Why are birds evil!?
moonlightglory: (What are you talking about)

[personal profile] moonlightglory 2018-05-26 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[ FAITH DIDN'T WANT TO LIE TO YOU, MADDIE... ]

Well, what are we waiting for? Let's get experimenting.
nor_iron_bars: And in my soul am free (No that ain't your style)

[personal profile] nor_iron_bars 2018-05-26 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Thing is... [She frowns, continuing on in a tone that suggests she's trying to put her own thoughts together, puzzling out something she's not totally sure of yet and using Maddie as a sounding board. Wouldn't be the first time- between Jail's weird magitech engineering projects and Maddie's podcast explaining the finer points of magic to a wider audience, they've bounced first draft speeches and wacky prototype ideas off each other before, in the spare moments when they didn't have anything else that needed doing.]

You gotta wonder, where are they getting the themes from, in the first place? Nature, unshaped magic, it'd probably have stuff from the local environment, sure, but it wouldn't make a fucking... conceptual leap, like that, into stuff that's just associated with the place. Dunno how it works here, could just be chasing my brand new tail right now, but back home?

When magic gets thematic like that, it means it's reacting to a thinking mind.

So, question is: which mind? Is it us, just showing up here now? Maybe the androids, if they've been living here long enough, or someone who was around earlier? Or is there someone else out there, that we oughtta know about...

[ Indeed being a teenager was tough all on it's own. Especially when said teenager in question is trying to become a hero and has pushed himself farther than he needs to, more than once. He can handle dangerous situations like it's nothing but this is something new and he doesn't know how to handle it.

The part where she's got muscle definition isn't the thing he can't handle, but it's more of certain assets that he can't deal with being exposed right now. But he's still civil and trying to not look there, instead focusing on what she's saying as he just nodded slowly in agreement. ]

Y-Yeah... It's actually quite interesting, but the shift to not having feet i-is a bit hard to get used to at first. Y-You're adapting really well, a-actually.

[ Closing his eyes for a moment, it let Izuku concentrate a bit more since he wasn't as distracted for the time being. ]

I wish I did but... I'm just as lost as you are. Kind of just... woke up here and ended up like this. Not even sure what or who brought us here to start with but with enough exploration i'm sure it could be figured out...

[ A pause. Then there's something of apt confusion on his face as he blinks cluelessly, trying to wrack his brain for a moment before it hits him. If she didn't know what a quirk was, then was she from some kind of weird alternate reality? ]

A buster... machine? Just what is that, though?
