See, most of this world is totally wrecked because of all these Fissures, and the people are gone, too. But there's a research station maintained by a few surviving androids--they want to study the Fissures and learn how to control them, to help us all get back to where we belong. They're letting all of us who've fallen in stay there, in exchange for stabilizing the Fissures with these things to help further their research.
