Considering that we're operating on two wildly different rulesets here, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that this... place is actually neither of them. So the chances that we're in somebody's memories or headspace or tower or whatever are slim to none.
... which doesn't help with figuring out what this place is. But knowing what it isn't is a good first step.
