TEST DRIVE 003

Hello, and welcome to the third test drive for Phantasmal Rift!

Test drive threads are assumed to be game canon for accepted characters unless otherwise noted, so don't feel like you'll have to introduce yourself a second time to everyone you meet! As an added bonus, participation in the test drive comes with the chance to earn up to two items of loot for your trouble! Characters who are accepted can earn one item for having a top level, and one for tagging out to someone else's top level! Your SWEET LOOT will be included with your acceptance notice.

Additionally, characters currently in game can earn themselves a piece of bonus loot for the dungeon by tagging people's top-levels on the test drive! Existing characters get their bonus loot along with the rest of their loot at the conclusion of the dungeon.

This test drive takes place in the Fissure known as Amesta Forest - a forest filled with silver mist and shrouded in eternal twilight, where your dreams become real! For a certain limited definition of real. This is significantly less awesome than it sounds. On the bright side, anyone within the mists will find themselves with no need to sleep, as though trapped in the same spring evening as the rest of the forest.

OPTION ONE: DREAM A LITTLE DREAM

This first option might happen to you just about anywhere. From the swirls of silver mist comes a shape - or perhaps more than one shape? Who knows, it's your dream -

Well, probably. It could also be someone else's.

Those who stay too long in any one part of the mist will find their subconscious minds influencing it into shapes - the exact sort of things that appear in their dreams. As with their real dreams, the details are sometimes strange - too much detail, or not enough, depending on where your focus is. The character who 'created' the dream specter will instantly understand what it's supposed to be, but other viewers might have some difficulty with it.

Fortunately for those of you prone to violent nightmares, these dream figures are incapable of doing harm - any blows struck by them simply leave behind the dampness of walking through thick mist. A hard enough blow will similarly disperse them - or, in most cases, you can simply move quickly and leave them behind.

OPTION TWO: THE MOVEMENTS OF THE TREES

A forest filled with mist is honestly a kind of spooky place, isn't it?

Well, it's about to get spookier, when you notice that there's a tree... somewhere there wasn't a tree, before. Or maybe it's that you were looking around and realized that a tree wasn't there here there was one before, instead leaving behind only a round, torn-up patch of earth from where the roots were buried.

Either way, there's only one conclusion to be drawn - the trees are moving.

Those who pay close attention will soon realize that it's only one kind of tree that moves - an absolutely unfamiliar kind, with mist-silver bark and thin, almost translucent leaves in large handlike shapes. They aren't very tall, and their branches split low to the ground, the structure something like a less crooked Japanese maple. The Wanderwoods seem prone to following specific people, usually only moving when out of sight, though you might catch them shuffling along if you have quick reflexes for looking over your shoulder.

What do they want? Well, nothing, really. They're just attracted to sapient beings and, especially, the way the mist forms into their dreams. So while they won't do anything in particular to the characters themselves, anyone with a dream-form hanging around them might find that manifestation suddenly papered in thin, grabbing leaves... and swallowed up.

OPTION THREE: WHAT NOW IS FOUND?

Not all of the forest is trapped in eternal spring. One part of it is held in exactly the opposite - a brilliantly colored autumn morning, just before dawn, with the trees overhead colored in brilliant reds and oranges. Leaves drift down in a slow breeze, and pile up in random places among the trees (which never seem to run out of leaves to drop), and silver pools of water gather at the bases of the trees and in any other depressions, their surfaces perfectly still mirrors.

The mist is quite a bit thinner here, too, which allows you to see... What is that familiar shape in the distance, between the trees?

While dream manifestations are uncommon in the region of Fall's Heart, it's not only dreams that manifest here. Instead, characters will see the figures of those they've lost - instantly recognizable, but unreachable and nearly impossible to catch, running through the trees heedless of how you call after them. It's impossible to catch up to them by mundane means, and those who use supernatural means to do so -

- will find that, at their touch, the vision crumbles into silvery mist-water, forming another of those perfect, reflective pools at their feet.

[ For the moment she was just trying to get past the ache in her chest and convincing herself that the figure she saw running through the forest ahead of her really hadn't been her mother. Made even harder when she'd spotted a smile on her mom's face for just a second so it was more like the one she knew, instead of the cognitive one that had wanted her dead.

Steps moving through the leaves was unmistakeable, and enough to get Futaba to look up with a touch of uncertainty. Mostly due to that she didn't know who this man was, but his voice held a gentle tone to it and reminded her of how Sojiro spoke to her back home.

Plus he didn't at all seem like one of those rotten adults like what she was used to. ]

...Yeah. You're right. Mom wouldn't have left me behind. She wasn't like that.

[ While she's beyond exhausted, she did reach up to take that hand carefully in the hopes she wouldn't have to remain here. Hurting and reminded of the one thing that she could never have back in her life again. ]

[Lost her mother, and so young... There's a sympathy to the man's expression, already soft, that says well enough that she isn't the only one who has lost something.

...There's also a large, fresh bruise across his jaw, so, you know, someone's had a time.]

True enough. No good parent would.

[He glances to the side - should Futaba follow his gaze, she might see the shadow of a tall young woman also in black, tauntingly between the trees before she vanishes in a flash of bluish-purple. It's pointless for Izunia to chase what he misses when it can warp as well as he can, so he doesn't even try.

He pulls Futaba up with an easy effort, instead, clearly more muscular than he looks under that fancy black coat.]

Nothing injured save your heart, I hope?

[ While she might not be the best at reading people's facial expressions? There was something about this man's that told her what words couldn't. That this might be more relatable to him than she was really aware of. Her gaze shifted towards his jaw and then nearly winced because that bruise did look quite painful. ]

Y-Yeah. Exactly.

[ Futaba nodded, allowing a moment to see where his eyes were looking at and catching the glimpse of a young woman before she just disappeared. Was that someone he had lost, too? She knew she'd never be able to ask a stranger that, at least aware of that much since it could come off as being rude and that wasn't how you made a good impression on people.

Being pulled up with such ease wouldn't be too hard due to her being rather small as it was, but it didn't hurt any in the slightest that he hadn't been bothered in doing so. Meeting strangers still left her somewhat apprehensive, but he'd done nothing wrong here so it was enough that she didn't feel like she wanted to hide or run away from this situation. ]

Nope. Just... really tired. I'm really not used to this much activity.

[ Which was the truth. Even standing up, Futaba really did look about ready to fall asleep and her legs kind of were trying to wobble on her. Being something of a shut-in really didn't leave her the most active or used to doing a lot of moving, really. ]

I do know that feeling. Here, allow me.

[In a single smooth motion and a glitter of blue light, he pulls a folding chair from... Nowhere, apparently, and unfolds it to allow her to sit. It's one of those round, cushy-looking ones, the fabric a bright pink that jars against his black clothes.]

This area doesn't seem to be too much trouble aside from the visions, so it should be safe for you to rest a while.

[Just casually pull a chair out of your hammerspace like it's no big deal, that's just how we roll around here.]

[ It takes a second or two for Futaba to actually process what the hell just happened. Mostly the whole 'i pulled a chair from pretty much nowhere' thing, more than anything else. ]

Whoah. How did you even do that? [ A pause. Hold on. She's played enough games and seen animes to know what this might be. ] It's some kinda unlimited hammerspace thing, isn't it?

[ Spoken without even the slightest hesitation, even as she moves to sit down and looking totally beat and worn out. She'd rather not just let herself sleep here as tempting as that would be, so she at least would have to do her best not to give into that desire for the time being. ]

The technical name is the Armiger, but I've heard several people use that term for similar abilities, yes. I also have some drinks and food, if you'd like.

[Once she's settled in, he sits on the ground nearby without much complaint. He has no desire to loom over her, after all.]

Wait, what?

[ Forgive her, Izunia. She just had to let that sink in first. ]

I mean sure, a drink would be great but you actually have that just readily available right now?

[ Sitting down is great at the moment, since her legs don't hurt anymore and she was able to concentrate on the matter at hand. Learning what kinds of people were actually here in this place with her. ]

You accept the chair readily, but not that I might be carrying drinks?

[Just going to. Pull a can of Dr. Jalapeno out for himself and loudly crack the seal. It doesn't even foam that badly over the edge.]

I've got a fairly good variety specifically for times like this.

[ The way things worked back home in the metaverse was to carry stuff that restored their health and ability to use their persona skills but something about this was just odd and intriguing all at once. ]

Drinks just don't seem like a common thing to keep in something like a hammerspace.. or armiger in this case.

[ Spoken as calmly as ever, watching Izunia pull out the drink and open it with ease. That's kinda impressive. ]

What are the limits to what you can put in there?

I can't store any individual item that I can't lift, and no live animals. Otherwise, it's virtually limitless.

[He has SO MUCH STUFF is it any wonder that this man's family is notorious for hoarding random junk.]

[personal profile] notjustahacker 2018-05-06 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Whoah. That's seriously some high level skills you have with that. Sounds like it probably comes in handy, though.

[ There's definitively interest in her gaze as she regards him, an eagerness sparkling in her eyes now. She wants to know more about this in all actuality. ]

Have you always had that or did you inherit it from someone?

Since I was born - it's a family gift. My brother often hid vegetables he didn't want to eat in his as a child.

[His voice is fond, if a little sad.]

It also has a sort of temporal stasis effect, so cold things remain cold and warm things remain warm, which is magnificent for being stuck out in the woods like this.

[personal profile] notjustahacker 2018-05-07 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
[ At the mention of what his brother did with it, she couldn't help but snicker a bit at the mental image. Using essentially a hammerspace to hide vegetables was certainly a first and kinda juvenile but something she could understand why they'd do it.

His tone had been a bit sad though, but she doesn't wanna press it if it's something that might upset him. ]

That's a unique way of using it. Never would have thought of using it that way, myself.

[ Now that just makes her even more curious and on that note.. ]

Yeah? So if I accept the drink offer, it'll be cold? The way this works really just seems seriously cool! I haven't seen anything like this existing outside of stuff i've seen in video games.

He was always something of a handful.

[Which Futaba will probably see for herself before too long. Still, it isn't too long before Izunia's expression eases into something lighter.]

Well, assuming you want a cold drink, at least. I also have hot chocolate and coffee.

[He's prepared for just about anything, really! Armiger so useful and so full of snacks.]
