TEST DRIVE 004

Hello and welcome to the fourth test drive for Phantasmal Rift!

Test drive threads are assumed to be game canon for accepted characters unless otherwise noted, so don't feel like you'll have to introduce yourself a second time to everyone you meet! As an added bonus, participation in the test drive comes with the chance to earn up to two items of loot for your trouble! Characters who are accepted can earn one item for having a top level, and one for tagging out to someone else's top level! Your SWEET LOOT will be included with your acceptance notice.

Additionally, characters currently in game can earn themselves a piece of bonus loot for the dungeon by tagging people's top-levels on the test drive! Existing characters get their bonus loot along with the rest of their loot at the conclusion of the dungeon.

This test drive takes place in Keystone Reef, a water-influenced Fissure to the northeast of the station. It is home to numerous fish and coral species, as well as a very interesting magical effect...

OPTION ONE: FINNY FUN

Under the water is where you woke up, and under the water is where you might be stuck for a while. The magic is lodged in you and has changed your form -- maybe a little, maybe a lot. Perhaps you only have gills, but you may also have a full set of changes, fins and no feet to speak of. Don't panic, you'll surely be fine if you just keep swimming...

Aside from the strange changes, it's a pretty cool place to be. If you've ever dreamed about scuba diving on a coral reef, the place that you've found yourself is perfect for that (minus the needing to scuba part). Curious fish swim up and then dart away into rock crevices, coral growths, and even down to bury themselves in the layer of sand at the bottom. The water is also fairly shallow, allowing you to surface if you so desire.

Even the sharks are friendly and just want to have as much a look at you as you want to look at them. Don't harass the glowing eels tucked into cracks between the rocks, though, they bite and don't particularly let go.

OPTION TWO: WORLD'S SMALLEST JUNGLE

This must certainly be an oceanside jungle - in spite of the humidity, the smell of salt on the air is strong. Brilliant greens and the occasional bright flowers, accompanied by island birdsong... It could be a nice place to spend an afternoon. There's not even that many bugs that want to drink your blood (though bugs in general are, well, quite plentiful).

Eventually, though, however far you go, you'll reach the beach and be met with the expanse of the ocean - blue, uncaring, and real big. While one side of the little island thankfully has land visible in the distance, the outer side just overlooks a near-endless expanse of blue. If you're a very good swimmer, you could probably make your way to land past the rocks of the reef itself... Otherwise, though, you might be just a bit stuck on your jungle island paradise.

At least until someone brings a boat.

OPTION THREE: SHIPWRECK

Both above and below the waterline are the remains of ships crashed upon the rocks, just waiting to be explored. Even though it has clearly been an incredibly long time, the chunks of wood and metal are still in fairly good condition, and the chance of finding something nice tucked in with them among the rocks is surely tempting to anyone with an adventurous spirit.

The wrecks beneath the waves also grow coral and seaweed, and provide havens for larger fish, dragon eels, and sharks. Those along the rocks above the waterline, on the other hand, provide a home for seabirds of all varieties. Most notable is the hulking shell of a shipping craft in the distance, looking very much modern if ruined by some centuries of exposure...

For right now, though, you'd best contend with the flotsam a bit closer to you, and the wildlife that might not take too kindly to your exploring. Below the waterline, the dragon eels found in a few places don't take kindly to being disturbed; above, you might run afoul of some overprotective seabirds protecting their nests. Maybe even an invisible seagull (normal sized) - how ridiculous would that be?

Um... I don't think I've seen her. I'm sorry. We only just got here.

Were you supposed to be somewhere else too...?

You just got here as well?

[Korra wonders about that -- given her form -- but then she reaches a hand up to her own newly developed gills. This girl must be lost just like she is then. Her next question confirms it.]

I was, yeah. I was even with someone else...but I guess I ended up here and she didn't. Where-ever here is anyway.

[She holds out a hand, trying to be friendly.]

My name is Korra.

Mhm-hm. I was with my friends and then... suddenly, I was here instead. Now it's just the two of us.

[She holds up her stuffed toy. Ah. Two, indeed.]

I'm Elize. [For a bit, she looks hesitant, but... she does take Korra's hand. She should still be polite, right? Then she nods over at the toy.] And this is Teepo.

It's nice to meet you Elize [there's only a slight pause, probably not enough to be noticeable, but Korra is pretty good with kids so she knows she should probably acknowledge the toy.] and Teepo.

It sounds like we're really in the same boat then...do you want to maybe stick together and see if we can find some others? Maybe someone who knows more about what happened than either of us, anyway.

Wah-hey, Korra! Nice to meet you, too!

[...No, you didn't imagine that, Korra. That was definitely the stuffed toy moving and talking just now. In a very different voice than Elize, so it can't be her doing that.]

Um. That might be nice. It's a little scary here. The ocean is very big...

[personal profile] temperedavatar 2018-06-12 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
[Now that does throw Korra for a loop. Is this further indication that she is in the spirit world that a strange creature can talk? But it had looked like a stuffed animal. She laughs nervously.]

Oh...hehheh....so you can talk, Teepo?

[Still, she's already offered, so she isn't going to let this new development change her mind. Teepo appears friendly at least.]

You're right. The ocean is pretty big but that's all the more reason to stick together. Have you been drifting here this whole time or did you come from a particular direction? I just want to make sure we don't get more turned around than we have already.

[She pauses and then glances up.]

Actually...have you tried swimming up to the surface yet?
darkcure: (080)

[personal profile] darkcure 2018-06-12 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure can! I have a mouth, don't I?

Mhm. Sometimes he talks a little too much...

[Well, she complains, but she doesn't say it like it's that big of a problem. She loves him anyhow.]

Um, I was a little further away and then I swam over here. It was too open before and I didn't know what to do. This seemed... a little safer, for now. [She considers that, though.] No, I haven't tried yet.

A lot of animals have mouths and can't talk.

[Korra decides to point out, helpfully.]

Okay. So we can stick to this area then. We might even be able to follow this to shallower water as long as we go in the opposite direction of the open ocean. What would make that easier though is if we swam up and tried to see if there is any land nearby.

[personal profile] darkcure 2018-06-13 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure they can! They just talk animalese!

[Makes sense, right? ...Right.]

O-Okay! Then let's go see. If there is land, then... that's a good way to go, right? Because then there might be people who know what's going on. [Elize glances down at her tail, though. Mhm...] I sure hope they'll be close to shore, though.
temperedavatar: (Stoic)

[personal profile] temperedavatar 2018-06-14 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
[There's a pause, but she sighs.] I guess you might have a point there.

[Korra follows her gaze to the tail. Crap. She's forgotten about that. Considering her own transformation was minor (gills and webbing mostly).] O-oh! Right. Let's see what our options are first. We might not even be near any land mass.

[After all, the water they were in was still fairly deep, meaning that they might have to swim a bit before actually finding it. Still, only one way to really see.
Korra starts to swim upwards, but doesn't go too fast until she knows her two new companions are following her.

I guess we'll just have to see...

[But she nods. And as Korra swims upwards, Elize is quick to follow. Her swimming speed isn't amazing, but... seahorse tails aren't exactly built for speed like most tails. Still, she's keeping up well enough.

And Teepo, well, he just hitches a ride in her arms.]

[It doesn't take long to reach the surface. Korra could probably move faster in the water if she used her bending, but the point is to stay together so she just uses her normal swimming ability augmented by her webbed hands.

She brushes her wet hair back when she surfaces and takes a look around. They are fairly close to shore after all, but Korra doesn't notice anyone wandering around over there. They're still a good swim away though, so it's not like they can just walk up to the beach.
]

That's not much of a swim at all.
