TEST DRIVE 005

Hello and welcome to the fifth test drive for Phantasmal Rift!

Test drive threads are assumed to be game canon for accepted characters unless otherwise noted, so don't feel like you'll have to introduce yourself a second time to everyone you meet! As an added bonus, participation in the test drive comes with the chance to earn up to two items of loot for your trouble! Characters who are accepted can earn one item for having a top level, and one for tagging out to someone else's top level! Your SWEET LOOT will be included with your acceptance notice.

Additionally, characters currently in game can earn themselves a piece of bonus loot for the dungeon by tagging people's top-levels on the test drive! Existing characters get their bonus loot along with the rest of their loot at the conclusion of the dungeon.

This time, the Test Drive takes place in Incendia - a less-ruined-than-expected city that has been abandoned for over a century, due to the magical effects of the Fissure (unstable reality region) that have made it impossible to live in. What effects are these, you ask?

Well...

BY DAY

By day, the city is lovely, if oddly empty. The sun shines down, and magical lights along the sidewalk - the equivalent of power lines - flow energy throughout the city. It's possible to think that the little sparks you sometimes see at the corner of your vision are related. After all, there's a great deal of magic in the air...

But in spite of this, the city lies abandoned, for no immediately apparent reason. You might have found yourself in a wide-open shipping yard, where large metal containers levitate about, moving without any help or oversight from human hands. Be careful; these containers changing positions make it easy to get lost for quite a long time, since few of them have much in the way of identifying traits over than color. Didn't you already pass that arrangement of two red ones on top of a blue one before...?

Or perhaps you're in the massive park in the center of town, with its blatantly magical fountain (a half-dome of water just hanging in the air) and the tents of an abandoned festival. Two stages and a long line of street food booths stand empty - surely no one will mind if you use them for something, right?

Or perhaps you're just suddenly on the streets, among stalled-out taxis and cars that go nowhere and lack the familiar smell of gasoline. There's apartments and shops all around, with little gardens spilling out over balconies... Maybe if you go knock on some doors, you'll find people.

Wherever it is you are, surely there's got to be someone around who can tell you what's going on, right...?

BY DUSK

As night falls, rather than dropping the way you might expect, the temperature begins to rise. And then the sparks in the edges of your vision are very much more than simply at the edges of your vision. They catch first on the plants, the papers stuck to the now-lit magical streetlights, the trash cans... And then, increasingly so, on the buildings proper, the shops, the skyscrapers, the cars in the street.

Within half an hour, an inferno is starting to build, and it's clear that there's not going to be anywhere above ground safe from it. But fortunately, there's safety beneath the level of the streets - if you can make your way fast enough to an underground station.

BY NIGHT

In the remains of these subway tunnels, lit mostly by the dim glow of magical energy lines, you're at least safe from the inferno above. Unlike the aboveground parts of the city, however, the tunnels are in an obvious state of disrepair, with broken concrete, rot, and mildew. The stations might have once been clean, but they quite transparently are not now, and the tunnels themselves are as bad or worse.

Thankfully, no trains run anymore, so you're not at risk of being run down on the broken tracks. There's also not any full-on collapses blocking the way, and the tunnels seem well-enough made that there's probably not risk of a cave-in.

Less pleasantly, you aren't the only thing taking shelter in the tunnels from the firestorm above. And the magic of that flame has touched the feral dogs that rove the tunnels, turning them into barking, howling creatures of as much flame as flesh themselves. And then there's the occasional patch of mold, mildew, and slime in the darkest parts of the tunnels, where even the magical circuits have gone out, that moves to douse any light that comes near it...

[He's only just retrieved his guidebook. Stashing it somewhere while exploring is all well and good until there's a chance that somewhere is about to be on fire. Books are notoriously susceptible to fire.

There's a familiar voice behind him. Sounds like Karma is here, too. At least there's that - together they can figure out what happened, once they're to safety-- but right as Nagisa turns, there's a minor explosion flaring out between them. There are still options, but Nagisa's most direct route is cut off.]

Karma?

[ The familiar flash of blue hair had caught his attention immediately, a tug of something almost possessive rising up in him but he didn't even have the chance to speak the other's name before the small explosion flared up between them. His expression - illuminated by the light - was briefly twisted in anger before tapering off somewhat. ]

Yeah. It's me. You have to get over here. I know a way to where it's safe but we have to go quickly.

[ His tone speaks of urgency, but everything about his posture was screaming that he wanted to just cut across despite the risk of the flames burning him. Nothing was going to take Nagisa away from him now that he'd found him here, after all. ]

[He can see through the flames a little bit - which means the stretch isn't that wide. If he ran fast enough, since he's still wearing his gym clothes, he might be able to get through with minimal burns...but he's not risking any damage to Korosensei's final gift, not yet.

Options. What are his options here?]

I have a book with me. I'll have to go around. [If he heads right....there's an alley that doesn't look overtaken yet, but there's no guarantee there's a way out on the other end. Left, there's open road, but the flames are rapidly closing the gap and there's no telling how far there is before a way to the other side of the wall of flame.

Right it is. He takes off. Should keep talking, so they don't lose track of eachother.] Where did this come from?

[ About the same time as Nagisa had been taking in his surroundings, Karma had been doing the same to try and assess the situation and what could be the best way out. Which is why it's so easy for him to just start off at a run on his side to keep up with Nagisa without anything spoken beforehand. ]

I'd have to guess it's something to do with the magic in the air and all around us, but as for just suddenly being here?

[ That was complicated. He himself wasn't unused to it but hey. A wry smile curls his lips in that next instance. ]

There's a bit more to it. Can't say I feel up to explaining much more until things are a little less chaotic.

[This fire's spreading faster than a normal fire would, considering how much of a city isn't readily flammable. Makes Nagisa inclined to believe the part about magic.

Running with this book is pretty hard, but like hell is he leaving it behind.]

Moe Box isn't responding. Are any of the others here?

[First thing he did when he realized he was no longer on the mountain was check his phone, but the AI didn't seem to be there. And he couldn't get any service to try contacting anyone else.]

[ Karma shook his head, gaze readily trailing around to make sure nothing around or ahead of them was catching fire yet. Even if he knew about Nagisa having the book, it's not something he'd ever tell him to give up, due to it's importance in his eyes as well. ]

Not that i've seen so far. It's just us at the moment.

[ He didn't need to check his phone to know it didn't work the way it should normally. Besides functioning as helping power his 'pins' he'd brought back from the 'mall'. ]

Right now I think it's for the best. Do you really think someone like Terasaka would last in a place like this?

[ Karma's smile is amused now, even as he keeps moving, gaze always watching and making sure to avoid and move around things as necessary. ]
theserpentsmiles: (Get back or just get out)

[Their special gym clothes might be flame-resistant, but...there's nowhere large enough to store this thing.]

Well, he is the defense specialist. He might get by. [The entrance to the alley isn't far away now. It should burn a little slower than more open areas, if only for the lack of flammable substances, but this fire already seems to be unusual. Is everything here coated with some sort of incendiary? Takebayashi would probably be able to tell...

Shoot. The alley's got a high gate preventing entry. Locked. Not normally a problem, it's short enough that he should be able to scale it without too much trouble, but not while enburdened by this book. What are his options...?]
comesaround: (▷ build me then break me)

[personal profile] comesaround 2018-07-18 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
[ Karma's amusement never really waned any, even with Nagisa's comment in the air between them. ]

Maybe. For how long though, is the real question here.

[ Once they reach that gate, his expression draws into a frown. The flames aren't as bad here than the rest, which gave him a bit of an idea. If the book - which he knew by it's size what it was - happened to be the issue, then he knew what to do but they'd have to act fast since the flames were relentless right now in their heat alone. ]

Nagisa. Take off the outer layer of your gym clothes, wrap the book in it and throw it over to me. It will leave you free to scale the fence and get over here quicker.
theserpentsmiles: (This one goes to the castaways)

You never know... [Terasaka is dumb, but he's still part of Class E and Nagisa isn't quite as mischievous as Karma. If nothing else, the other teen would be too stubborn to die in a fire.

By the time Karma has finished giving his orders, Nagisa is following them. He'll have less protection from the flames himself without his jacket, but he can heal from a few burns. Thankfully, the jacket is easily enough fabric to thoroughly wrap the giant book.

The temperature is still riding here, and rapidly. He throws the bundle over the gate. Then gets as much distance as the fire allows and runs at speed to get momentum for a leap. It'll take him maybe a second and change to scramble over.]
comesaround: (▷ wrap it up)

[personal profile] comesaround 2018-07-19 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
[ Karma had absolutely no doubts that Nagisa would follow his orders in the slightest, since he wasn't one to give those out without good reason. He thought through the things he wanted to say and how to go about things; even moreso with the lack of time they had before things fully ignited up here.

His eyes were firmly on Nagisa and as soon as he tossed the bundle over the gate, Karma was already on the move and made to catch it with ease. It's familiarity in what it was made his heart feel a bit heavy but he pushed that aside, knowing it won't take long for the smaller teen to get over this hurdle. ]

If we're quick I think we can still make it underground. Not too keen on burning to a crisp here.

[ While very subtle, the edge of his words are almost joking but at the same time very real and serious. ]

[It's not a high enough drop to bother tumbling so he just sticks a three-point landing. It only takes a moment to get back on his feet. Underground...got it. Basements and sewage systems? No, those probably still qualify as part of the city....something deeper. Caves? Or a subway, that would make sense.]

Lead the way. [They can suss out details of the situation once they're more or less safe.]
