TEST DRIVE 006

Hello and welcome to Phantasmal Rift's Test Drive Meme!

Test drive threads are assumed to be game canon for accepted characters unless otherwise noted, so don't feel like you'll have to introduce yourself a second time to everyone you meet! As an added bonus, participation in the test drive comes with the chance to earn up to two items of loot for your trouble! Characters who are accepted can earn one item for having a top level, and one for tagging out to someone else's top level! Your SWEET LOOT will be included with your acceptance notice.

Additionally, characters currently in game can earn themselves a piece of bonus loot for the dungeon by tagging people's top-levels on the test drive! Existing characters get their bonus loot along with the rest of their loot at the conclusion of the dungeon.

This test drive takes place in the Telovia Mines, an extremely abandoned magical crystal mine and the town and infrastructure that one supported it. The tunnels are in reasonably good condition and would be reasonably navigable... Except for one thing.

ONE MINOR THING

The magical effects of the Fissure cause those within it to lose something when they arrive - for most people, it's a sense such as touch or hearing, but it's also possible to lose a more esoteric sense (such as your sense of balance or temperature, but NOT things like "sense of morals" or "sense of style"), the ability to speak, or the ability to recognize faces. As a general guideline, whatever characters lose should be non-supernatural in nature, and something they would have taken for granted as a part of their ability to function.

ODDS AND ENDS

Just because the mines are empty of people doesn't mean that they've gone still. While for the most part, the carts full of crystals remain in one place, the huge amount of magic has left more than a few of the miners' abandoned tools still going through their motions. Rusted pickaxes swing at the walls, and dead lanterns swing from the ceiling. Crystals occasionally free themselves from shards of rock to pile into bins, which then empty into already-overflowing mine carts.

As long as you leave them to their jobs, everything will be fine. If you try to stop the tools (and it is the tools themselves, for anyone who might be looking for ghosts) from doing their jobs, they'll chase you down until you leave their general vicinity.

Of course, the eternally working tools don't care much about the structural integrity of the mine tunnels...

THEY ALL PILE UP

...And so, inevitably, there are cave-ins.

Most of them are fairly minor, and you can see them (well, if you can see) enough to just work around them. Some of them are big enough that you're going to have to dig through them first, if you can.

And then there's the handful that block passages entirely. But don't panic! The tunnels are designed around the possibility of this happening - rather than coming to an end, the majority of them loop back around to the main arteries of the mine.

E... ventually...

But you and whoever is stuck with you on this side of the cave-in might be wandering for quite a while before you get there. Hopefully one of you still has a sense of direction, assuming either of you ever had one in the first place.

[He shrugs in response. He's as happy about the idea as Izzy is, really] Deity, over-powered asshole, weird random thing, no idea what it is. But it would seem so, from what others have found. There's a post on the network about it that you can read when you get access to it.

"Can't blame him for wanting to get away from the Astrals... or at least Bahamut." It comes out more a curse than a name, heavy with disdain. He'd been firmly on the Fuck Bahamut side of things even before finding out they were fictional. Why did they get the version of Bahamut that's an asshole?

"Portland... As in Oregon?" Because of course one of he many books he'd devoured immediately upon getting back to the facility was geography.

"I... well I know who you are because I've been helping Ignis with his research for the last 4 years. Up until about 11 weeks ago. I got... uh... drawn into a version of Earth, part of a ritual to appease an ancient god by an organization that had no idea what they were messing with. It was... pretty miserable but we managed to convince them to stop the ritual and now we're helping make sure things never get that bad again. Most of us anyway." And as he speaks he reaches up to tug the baseball cap he's wearing off, holding it out to Ardyn so he can see the SCP logo.

"I've been researching as much as I can about that version of Earth, especially America since that's where we we're stationed. And the worlds the rest of us came from."

Y... eah. Post on the network. Right.

[She pinches the ridge of her snout, between her eyes.] Look, dude. Unless my initial theory of "multiplayer Scrolls of Sending" is right on the money, I'm gonna need more info on the level of magitech we're working with here.

[Okay the mermaid thing better not happen to him or he will freak out. hard]

I've been figuring out what to fill the free time with for weeks now. At least there's things to do here.

[As opposed to when he was dead, didn't need to sleep, and had nothing to do but sit around slowly going out of his mind.]

[Sync rolls his eyes a little, but it's good-naturedly at least. He sometimes forgets he learns things faster than other people]

From what I know of it, the 'network' is basically a giant open conversation that people don't have to be physically present for. [He starts up the hologram again, scrolling through the posts and opening one at random with a decent amount of replies on it] Like sending letters to people, only without having to wait for them to send in order to get there.

[Might wanna avoid Keystone Reef then, buddy.]

Yeah, at least there's that. I think I've been studying more since I came here than I did back home.

[That comment is punctuated with a snort.]

There's group sparring sessions that happen pretty regularly, too, if that's something you'd be interested in.

[ He nods at the first question, though... something painfully obvious ghosts over his expression at the second question: this is a sticky subject that he's only begun to acknowledge as being a problem. Maybe if he were talking to someone other than another Akira Kurusu, it might be easier to miss how he tenses in response to being called "the other one".

Although, frankly speaking, that's probably just being generous. ]

Every Fissure is different, but each one comes with its own brand of "gifts" that most of us would probably do better without. Some aren't so bad, like how the first Fissure had chocolate-flavored sharks with candy inside them.

Then, there was the Fissure that put everyone's dreams and nightmares on display, even if it gave a lot of us a source of help with nightmares.

[ Finally, onto that last thing... ]

You're actually the third Akira I've met, ever since leaving the game.

Ok, so. I was right. A little more interactive than "cast Sending and reply", but I can dig it. Good functionality.

Anything else that fancy gadget can do, or is it just for communication?

Works with written word, voice, or pictures too. It's useful.

[He messes around with the device a little. Sync's...not that great with it, but he can get a few of the other programs on it open at least?] There's a couple of programs that look like they're for storing written information without sharing it, and one I'm pretty sure it meant to be an art program of some kind, though how you'd use it on one of these I have no idea.
le_mat: (10)

[personal profile] le_mat 2018-09-01 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
Ah.

[He offers Akira a soft look of sympathy. Sure, the info he's sharing is important, and he files it away. Honestly, he meant 'the one that's not a girl' but that isn't really much better.]

It's strange... I guess I always guessed there could be other versions of me- I learned that while on Airlocked. But I never thought I'd meet you in person. Though.... we don't actually look so much alike, now.

Mai told me you were in a similar set up to what we were- being stolen and made to play a sick game. I'm... sorry.

It is relatively cool for the kind of summer day it is, really. The rain is coming down pretty soundly as Izunia steps away.

"Chairs, meals, weapons, the majority of several people's wardrobes, half a chocolate shop and a significant portion of a library..."

Izunia just starts listing things to himself as he sets out two reasonably comfortable looking folding chairs and a small matching table before sitting. Two of the lights do vanish at that point, but the last remains floating over his shoulder. "Nearly everything save my cat and large furniture, at this point. Is there anything I can get you?"

Ooh man. That sounds... super useful. I mean, you saw this. [Out of her satchel, she pulls out the notepad she had used for communication earlier and elsewhere, which is very, very heavily used.]

I go through these things at staggering rates. Having an enchanted notepad that doesn't fall apart sounds right up my alley.

[ He averts his gaze at that apology, only to hold a blink and shake his head. It's fine... In the sense that there's no way this Akira could have known the things this one has been through. He offers a dimly wry smile. ]

Ardyn told me a lot about that show, when he first arrived. He thought I was you for a moment.

[ There's something bitter in his expression - he's still pissed over everything he heard about that show, even now. The things those people were put through- Well... those are all thoughts for another time, clearly. He takes a deep breath. ]

I'm sorry, too. None of you deserved any of it.

[ As for the Reaper's Game...? ]

What Goro, Kurama, and I went through is different. We signed contracts, and the point of the Reaper's Game is to help fight a multiversal threat. Even if the version we played was wrong, the game itself was originally supposed to be for a greater good.

[ As he said, though... their version was wrong. Very wrong. He's pausing, gaze resting on his phone for a moment... ]

By the way, how old are you?
fifthreplacement: (Standing)

[personal profile] fifthreplacement 2018-09-01 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's come in handy a few times for me. I've been writing down things so I don't forget them, and it seems to store a lot of information without the problem of running out of ink or paper. Whoever thought of these had a smart idea.

[Contemplative is alright. It's better than screeching about the situation, which Sync will take]

That's fair enough. It's not exactly something you can decide how to react to easily, I imagine.

If she was going to be amused by it, then Mogget was going to let her be. Why not? It made a nice change from the sulking children he was usually surrounded by.

"How is it that you navigate? I haven't seen many who navigate without sight yet still see to be able to 'see'."

I've had many names. But lately, I go by Mogget.

Finding myself here isn't my own first time out of my world, either. I became close to another Kurusu Akira and Akechi Goro, so of course I know about the Metaverse.

['Close'. Kurama shifts slightly, raising a hand to rub at the bridge of his nose as his headache spikes for a second.]

My name is Kurama Minamino Lucis Caelum, though you're welcome to just call me Kurama.

[Nathaniel blinks, looking over at the other woman and her Pokeballs.] It seems too solid to dig through easily. And my Ghost Pokemon seem to have lost their sense of direction - I would worry about them getting lost there.
stormkingofshepherds: (When I have lived the span of hours)

"I did not expect to end up in a mine. Or to lose all sensation like this. That's not what I expect of most mines." Nathaniel figures it's pretty obvious his sense of touch is shot, based on how his limbs are dangling loosely.

Kate turns to look at the cat, hissing instinctively and then again when she realizes she can't smell anything about it. It feels unnatural. She ends up squinting in an attempt to actually figure out its appearance.
charterbound: (Change)

[personal profile] charterbound 2018-09-01 11:33 am (UTC)(link)
"It would seem that this world is rather unstable, from what I have heard from others. I myself cannot smell anything." Mogget can kind of tell that the human's sense is gone from a glance, but that also required him actually paying more attention to the human rather than the Pokemon.

The hissing doesn't bother him any. "You don't have to hiss. I mean you no harm, nor could I do any even if I wanted to," he comments, glancing over the Arbok curiously.

She's only dangerous to threats. [Kate squints in the direction of the minecart. Not having scent is so annoying.] And they're Pokemon. There's more of them back where I come from, and they can all be friendly with the proper socialization.
