TEST DRIVE 006

Hello and welcome to Phantasmal Rift's Test Drive Meme!

Test drive threads are assumed to be game canon for accepted characters unless otherwise noted, so don't feel like you'll have to introduce yourself a second time to everyone you meet! As an added bonus, participation in the test drive comes with the chance to earn up to two items of loot for your trouble! Characters who are accepted can earn one item for having a top level, and one for tagging out to someone else's top level! Your SWEET LOOT will be included with your acceptance notice.

Additionally, characters currently in game can earn themselves a piece of bonus loot for the dungeon by tagging people's top-levels on the test drive! Existing characters get their bonus loot along with the rest of their loot at the conclusion of the dungeon.

This test drive takes place in the Telovia Mines, an extremely abandoned magical crystal mine and the town and infrastructure that one supported it. The tunnels are in reasonably good condition and would be reasonably navigable... Except for one thing.

ONE MINOR THING

The magical effects of the Fissure cause those within it to lose something when they arrive - for most people, it's a sense such as touch or hearing, but it's also possible to lose a more esoteric sense (such as your sense of balance or temperature, but NOT things like "sense of morals" or "sense of style"), the ability to speak, or the ability to recognize faces. As a general guideline, whatever characters lose should be non-supernatural in nature, and something they would have taken for granted as a part of their ability to function.

ODDS AND ENDS

Just because the mines are empty of people doesn't mean that they've gone still. While for the most part, the carts full of crystals remain in one place, the huge amount of magic has left more than a few of the miners' abandoned tools still going through their motions. Rusted pickaxes swing at the walls, and dead lanterns swing from the ceiling. Crystals occasionally free themselves from shards of rock to pile into bins, which then empty into already-overflowing mine carts.

As long as you leave them to their jobs, everything will be fine. If you try to stop the tools (and it is the tools themselves, for anyone who might be looking for ghosts) from doing their jobs, they'll chase you down until you leave their general vicinity.

Of course, the eternally working tools don't care much about the structural integrity of the mine tunnels...

THEY ALL PILE UP

...And so, inevitably, there are cave-ins.

Most of them are fairly minor, and you can see them (well, if you can see) enough to just work around them. Some of them are big enough that you're going to have to dig through them first, if you can.

And then there's the handful that block passages entirely. But don't panic! The tunnels are designed around the possibility of this happening - rather than coming to an end, the majority of them loop back around to the main arteries of the mine.

E... ventually...

But you and whoever is stuck with you on this side of the cave-in might be wandering for quite a while before you get there. Hopefully one of you still has a sense of direction, assuming either of you ever had one in the first place.

[No, it does not explain anything at all].

I guess we are both from very different places. It is the origin and the final destination? Okay. Could you tell me more?

I think I'd remember seeing a...marsupial feline like that.

It's...

...it doesn't matter one bit here does it. Crap.

I can't beleive this thread is now Naze Nani Nadesico

[Hmmn. She thinks hard about how to describe this, scratching at her neck.

The neck that has some kind of open cable port in it.

Yeah.]

So, you drop something, it falls, right?

If you were floating in a big sea of nothing and you dropped something, it would fall towards the most massive thing around it.

On Earth - hell, on a hypothetical Terra - the most massive thing is the Earth you're standing on. Anything that has mass gets caught in this Gravity, and gets weight, and plummets towards the ground. Further if it's massive enough.

Air is only around Earth cause Earth is so fucking massive that air - which masses next to nothing, but still masses something - gets caught in it's pull.

Any of this clear?
redmeguca: (If you say so.)

{Not unless you get it back somehow. Now come on, let's get out of here so you can use all your senses to appreciate how "heavy" you are now.}

Could you, uh, clarify 'monsterballs?

[She's half expecting to get Cup o' Dirted here. It's a ball... with monsters in it!]

Caw... Caw, caw.

[She's just going to make bird noises to herself for a minute as she thinks.]

Okay, um. Humans landed on the world a long, long, long time ago! Thousands of years.

Not a clue. Too heavy for Ares, not enough for Zeus. I wanna say 10 meters per second per second, but there's a whole boatload of reasons it can't be Earth, either.

...Shit, did my shipself manage to go FTL in that last fight? That's theoretically possible when it's messing with tidal forces so much, but it would be batshit crazy.

Think so. Should also clear up if we stabilize the are. Which, besides finding new arrivals like you, is one of our big goals for being here.

As for being a Bard, right now? Decent skill stack and weapon skills. No instrument, so I can't use my Bardic Performance, can't speak so no spells... Just a few other tricks and my sword. Can't even use my Avowed powers, same issue... I mean, there's my racial spell-likes, but they've got their own limits. Many of which include "I promised not to use them in most circumstances."

She bites her lip, looking down at her hand, and the lack of any plugs into it's neural socket. Looks at her, down then up, in a costume that Mars wouldn't wear on a bet. Looks at the mines around her.

"...Followup questions. Have you heard of planet Earth, and where the fuck are we?" she asks.
nocawsforconcern: (pic#12521247)

[personal profile] nocawsforconcern 2018-09-05 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
"Nope!" She sounds so cheerful about that. "No idea on either of those! What's Earth? This is a mine."

[personal profile] opensfuturesclosespasts 2018-09-05 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
"For the sake of argument let's call Earth my homeworld."

It really isn't. She's, to steal the phrase, thankful for her cradle's graces but she's never going back. But the lack of its presence, the tidal force of its Culture, is... unnerving.

"Meaning we are both totally fuckin' lost. Doesn't that worry you, like, at all?"
seekingsunrise: (concerned)

[personal profile] seekingsunrise 2018-09-05 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
Overrun with disease. Ah...

Talcott nods, though. It does make sense. A new body would be the only way to save him from the Scourge. "Convenient at least?" He looks a little apologetic even as he says it.

"Do I want to know what you owe them for replacing your body?"
nocawsforconcern: (pic#12521247)

[personal profile] nocawsforconcern 2018-09-05 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
"Hmmmm." She furrows her eyebrows as she thinks, before finally coming out with: "Nope! Should it?"

"Owe them? Absolutely fucking nothing--hell, after the whole legal proceedings settled down I'm basically worth the empire's military budget several dozen times over."

Ardyn laughed, somewhere between bitter and actually amused.

"No, you see, once the whole show was exposed as not actually being scripted, the executive producer and indeed the entire network were in all kinds of trouble. It turns out it is very illegal to kidnap people from across universes and force them to kill one another because you're a godsdamned lunatic whose entire race doesn't comprehend the idea of creativity."
seekingsunrise: (oh no)

[personal profile] seekingsunrise 2018-09-05 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
The phrasing there makes him so uncomfortable.

"Okay, we're not talking about anyone's graves if it's all the same to you." Because he knows Ignis survives but he still doesn't want to think about the inevitability of his death.

"You might be surprised how much I know. Ignis needed someone to theorize with, someone to read all of the documents we had to comb through looking for any useful scrap of information. It was just the two of us more often than not. For years." Not to mention the fact that he uh... watched an LP of Episode Ignis and Verse 2 in his rage at the news of a golden end.
seekingsunrise: (annoyed)

[personal profile] seekingsunrise 2018-09-05 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
"Better safe than sorry. They... aren't unfamiliar with crossing universes as it were. If someone does show up here I'd rather not get in trouble with my superiors." Especially not as a D class.

But the eye roll gets a soft huff of laughter and he shrugs a little. What can you do?
bloodyashes: ([F] This is my Jade face)

[personal profile] bloodyashes 2018-09-05 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, at least that means I can skip the annoying 'what do you mean other worlds are real' part." Couple of veteran travelers, these.
seekingsunrise: (oh no)

[personal profile] seekingsunrise 2018-09-05 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
"O-oh." He just kind of blinks in surprise at that. "I suppose... at least you got some compensation for it all?"

He got a gilded cage. And a truck, the truck is very important. Even if he hasn't really gotten it working yet.

"I got the crash course on that a few months ago.... and the actual class on it last week." Another shrug. "I haven't actually been with my organization for long."

But then he didn't need to be part of the Foundation to be skilled at killing things.
bloodyashes: ([F] Sorry about him)

[personal profile] bloodyashes 2018-09-05 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Not the first time for me, either." Though - he is going to raise an eyebrow and look Talcott over one more time. "You move way too well to be a newbie."
founderinglight: ([late with spacebucks])

"...Fair enough. You can't honestly be surprised I have a bit of a morbid bent if you're that familiar with the records, though." Who do you think made the banner a skull with wings, etc, etc.

"And while that's entirely true, I can't imagine him sharing his use of the Ring with much of anyone." But he'll just throw it right out there like it isn't that much a big deal. "He was granted its power for the sake of protecting Noctis from Ardyn directly - though I have my doubts that Noctis was truly the one at risk on Leviathan's altar, but Ignis can hardly be blamed for not having insight into the exhaustion of a two-thousand-year-old. The point is, that in that confrontation, rdyn made use of the power of kings rather than the Scourge - just briefly, just a single warp, but it was enough. Enough to throw everything I was so certain of out the window."

He sighs, leaning his chin against one hand. "The Ardyn that's here is... Human, after everything, by means of an extradimensional diversion far less pleasant than this. I won't discuss the details, they're his to tell, but we're... managing. Poorly, sometimes, but you can't fix two thousand years in a few months."
seekingsunrise: (reflection)

[personal profile] seekingsunrise 2018-09-05 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
"The world I'm from originally isn't... particularly safe." Isn't that an understatement. "At least not since I was a child."

The fact that most people would still consider him a child, only a few weeks past 18, is irrelevant. He hasn't really been a child since the Night fell. And even before that he was learning the intricacies of knife work from Monica.

"The Foundation didn't teach me to be dangerous, they took me on because I already was."

Does he sound proud of that? Gosh, maybe a little.

"Makes sense. I didn't have much of a choice, either." Are we talking about the tragic backstory? No, not today. "If they're hiring, though, I think I'll pass."

He's also already had more than enough of people telling him what to do when they aren't even upfront with their motives. "Has anyone told you what this world's like, then?"
tomatowizard: (This got bigger than me)

[personal profile] tomatowizard 2018-09-05 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, when you have the divine mandate of god to rule over others and also can spit fireballs, it's hard for anyone to apply consequences to you if you don't want them to. The only way anything is going to change is if we get rid of magic entirely, or give it to everyone!"

She was ranting now. Samata had a tendency to get carried away sometimes.
