TEST DRIVE 006

Hello and welcome to Phantasmal Rift's Test Drive Meme!

Test drive threads are assumed to be game canon for accepted characters unless otherwise noted, so don't feel like you'll have to introduce yourself a second time to everyone you meet! As an added bonus, participation in the test drive comes with the chance to earn up to two items of loot for your trouble! Characters who are accepted can earn one item for having a top level, and one for tagging out to someone else's top level! Your SWEET LOOT will be included with your acceptance notice.

Additionally, characters currently in game can earn themselves a piece of bonus loot for the dungeon by tagging people's top-levels on the test drive! Existing characters get their bonus loot along with the rest of their loot at the conclusion of the dungeon.

This test drive takes place in the Telovia Mines, an extremely abandoned magical crystal mine and the town and infrastructure that one supported it. The tunnels are in reasonably good condition and would be reasonably navigable... Except for one thing.

ONE MINOR THING

The magical effects of the Fissure cause those within it to lose something when they arrive - for most people, it's a sense such as touch or hearing, but it's also possible to lose a more esoteric sense (such as your sense of balance or temperature, but NOT things like "sense of morals" or "sense of style"), the ability to speak, or the ability to recognize faces. As a general guideline, whatever characters lose should be non-supernatural in nature, and something they would have taken for granted as a part of their ability to function.

ODDS AND ENDS

Just because the mines are empty of people doesn't mean that they've gone still. While for the most part, the carts full of crystals remain in one place, the huge amount of magic has left more than a few of the miners' abandoned tools still going through their motions. Rusted pickaxes swing at the walls, and dead lanterns swing from the ceiling. Crystals occasionally free themselves from shards of rock to pile into bins, which then empty into already-overflowing mine carts.

As long as you leave them to their jobs, everything will be fine. If you try to stop the tools (and it is the tools themselves, for anyone who might be looking for ghosts) from doing their jobs, they'll chase you down until you leave their general vicinity.

Of course, the eternally working tools don't care much about the structural integrity of the mine tunnels...

THEY ALL PILE UP

...And so, inevitably, there are cave-ins.

Most of them are fairly minor, and you can see them (well, if you can see) enough to just work around them. Some of them are big enough that you're going to have to dig through them first, if you can.

And then there's the handful that block passages entirely. But don't panic! The tunnels are designed around the possibility of this happening - rather than coming to an end, the majority of them loop back around to the main arteries of the mine.

E... ventually...

But you and whoever is stuck with you on this side of the cave-in might be wandering for quite a while before you get there. Hopefully one of you still has a sense of direction, assuming either of you ever had one in the first place.

Ignis staggers, but he doesn't stumble. He couldn't sense the movement of him, and that leaves him disoriented.

That, and he doesn't recognize the voice of the other. He thinks back, to everyone he's ever met, but he can't place who it could be. Someone who knew him from somewhere else, then? Another person who had been somewhere different, like Asch?

It's unsettling, and he doesn't know quite what to do.

"I...think you might be mistaking me for a different version of myself," he mumbles awkwardly. He doesn't want to disappoint another person, but... Better to rip the bandaid off.

Ignis doesn't hug him back and that stings a little but when he speaks it makes it clearer why. Talcott takes a step back, hands lingering on Ignis' shoulders, appraising the man in front of him. Scars paler and shiny and fresh, hair still light enough to nearly be called blond.

"You're younger!" It's a little surprising but not that strange, given everything else that's happened. Tal drops his hands down to catch Ignis' drawing them up to his face. He doesn't do it too often and he might be even more uncertain about it now, still being fairly new to the blindness, but Talcott is offering regardless, if he wants to get a feel for the changes.

"It's Talcott."

The declaration that he's younger doesn't illuminate anything any more, and he makes a startled noise when his hands are grabbed. He doesn't pull away, though, simply confused instead of feeling attacked or anything like that.

He moves his hands over Talcott's face, and it's awkward, but it helps him build an image of the boy. Man. He must be a man, by now.

"Hester?" But so much older. Ten years older, which would mean... He's lived through those years of darkness. "You're older than I remember."

Ignis' fingers move over his face and he smiles, a little sheepish but pleased at the familiarity of it. He'd changed so much over the years it had become something of a birthday tradition, just to see how much he'd changed.

"Well yeah. If you're younger then I've gotta be older." He reaches up, fingertips brushing lightly over the hair at Ignis' temple. "Gods I'd forgotten how much lighter your hair used to be."

The years of darkness had deepened the color of even Prompto's hair. Ignis' was so much darker it was a little uncanny seeing him so close to blond again. "What's the last thing you remember?"

There are things he can recognize, things that bring forth a familiarity, as he shapes Talcott's face in his mind.

"Is that how it works?" He sounds amused, and he starts a bit at the feeling of hands at his temple, but it doesn't take him long to relax.

Talcott had matured quickly - had to, with the world becoming what it was - and he had seem to become even more so.

"The last thing...Noctis going into the Crystal." Which was so, so long ago.

So many years with his main company being the Amicitias and Ignis, adjusting to his disability, meant that it was second nature for Talcott to touch casually and often. Especially after the painful weeks of being so detached from his body.

Ignis starts and Tal just rests his fingers steadily against the side of his head, taking a moment to toy with his hair a little.

"And no product? What's with that?"

But then he answers that question and Talcott flinches a little, his breath catching. "O-oh..." And he steps in again, hugging Ignis gently. "That's awful, I'm sorry."
