TEST DRIVE 006

Hello and welcome to Phantasmal Rift's Test Drive Meme!

Test drive threads are assumed to be game canon for accepted characters unless otherwise noted, so don't feel like you'll have to introduce yourself a second time to everyone you meet! As an added bonus, participation in the test drive comes with the chance to earn up to two items of loot for your trouble! Characters who are accepted can earn one item for having a top level, and one for tagging out to someone else's top level! Your SWEET LOOT will be included with your acceptance notice.

Additionally, characters currently in game can earn themselves a piece of bonus loot for the dungeon by tagging people's top-levels on the test drive! Existing characters get their bonus loot along with the rest of their loot at the conclusion of the dungeon.

This test drive takes place in the Telovia Mines, an extremely abandoned magical crystal mine and the town and infrastructure that one supported it. The tunnels are in reasonably good condition and would be reasonably navigable... Except for one thing.

ONE MINOR THING

The magical effects of the Fissure cause those within it to lose something when they arrive - for most people, it's a sense such as touch or hearing, but it's also possible to lose a more esoteric sense (such as your sense of balance or temperature, but NOT things like "sense of morals" or "sense of style"), the ability to speak, or the ability to recognize faces. As a general guideline, whatever characters lose should be non-supernatural in nature, and something they would have taken for granted as a part of their ability to function.

ODDS AND ENDS

Just because the mines are empty of people doesn't mean that they've gone still. While for the most part, the carts full of crystals remain in one place, the huge amount of magic has left more than a few of the miners' abandoned tools still going through their motions. Rusted pickaxes swing at the walls, and dead lanterns swing from the ceiling. Crystals occasionally free themselves from shards of rock to pile into bins, which then empty into already-overflowing mine carts.

As long as you leave them to their jobs, everything will be fine. If you try to stop the tools (and it is the tools themselves, for anyone who might be looking for ghosts) from doing their jobs, they'll chase you down until you leave their general vicinity.

Of course, the eternally working tools don't care much about the structural integrity of the mine tunnels...

THEY ALL PILE UP

...And so, inevitably, there are cave-ins.

Most of them are fairly minor, and you can see them (well, if you can see) enough to just work around them. Some of them are big enough that you're going to have to dig through them first, if you can.

And then there's the handful that block passages entirely. But don't panic! The tunnels are designed around the possibility of this happening - rather than coming to an end, the majority of them loop back around to the main arteries of the mine.

E... ventually...

But you and whoever is stuck with you on this side of the cave-in might be wandering for quite a while before you get there. Hopefully one of you still has a sense of direction, assuming either of you ever had one in the first place.

I see...I've never seen crystals like this, so I guess I know for next time now.

Ah, I'll be okay! It's only a little cut. [She tilts her head to one side as Akira recognises her uniform] Yeah, it is. Gekkoukan's the school I go to.
hairpincurves: (are you in the shadows?)

[personal profile] hairpincurves 2018-09-11 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
I've taken to collecting them, honestly. Of course, I pick up anything that looks like it'd be useful...

Are you sure? It might be a little cut, but it'd probably get kind of nasty if it got infected or something... [... Give her a moment, she's digging in her bag before pulling out a can of Second Maid and offering it.] This should help a little... I think.

[... Yay innocuous healing items...]
fullmoonfool: (???)

[personal profile] fullmoonfool 2018-09-11 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
I guess they could be useful. Is it really okay to just collect them?

[Sure, she's used to picking up items off the floor of Tartarus, but the mine is more likely to actually be owned by someone, and Minako doesn't want to steal]

Ah...are you sure? I don't want to take it if it's something you might need later.

[She doesn't even question the weird healing item. If it's not rancid gravy, then it's fine by her]
hairpincurves: (so look inside the mirror)

[personal profile] hairpincurves 2018-09-11 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
The mine's pretty much abandoned, it should be fine. ... So did anyone give you the newbie spiel yet?

[At the question about the healing item, she just nods.] I've got... way more than I really need and if I do need any more, I have someone I can just pester for some.

[Honestly, she's trying to forget rancid gravy is even a thing. Odd morsels too...]
fullmoonfool: (Thanks)

[personal profile] fullmoonfool 2018-09-11 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Not yet, no. I've just kinda been wandering around.

[After a second of thought, she decides it seems alright and takes the can] Thanks then. You're more prepared than I am for this place.

[She has a couple of item but it's not really enough to be using them so freely on small injuries]
hairpincurves: (surrender the throne)

[personal profile] hairpincurves 2018-09-11 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
So, this kind of isn't your world. At all. Dunno what it's called, but you're definitely not on Port Island anymore. There's a bunch of unstable cracks in reality called Fissures where something's been pulling people through. People have been showing up for a few months now.

[She'll just... let that sink in.]

Well, honestly, that's probably because I came here intentionally. [A beat.] My hoarding tendencies also probably contribute.
fullmoonfool: (Thinking)

[personal profile] fullmoonfool 2018-09-11 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
[Yeah that takes a bit to process. She's also not sure how much to believe it, but...Akira doesn't seem like a bad person, so maybe it's true? How is it true? This is weird]

...I thought I was used to strange things happening by now. But this is definitely new. [She smiles a little all the same. Well, nothing to do but adapt, she guesses]

I can understand the hoarding tendencies. Sometimes I feel like I buy too many things from the store when I'm planning to go somewhere.

[So many things left behind, she is going to miss all of it]
hairpincurves: (are you in the shadows?)

[personal profile] hairpincurves 2018-09-11 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
This world is definitely the kind of place where you start saying "this may as well happen" really quickly. Just a warning. Even when you're used to what you might qualify as 'strange'...

[That sounds a lot like you know from experience, Akira.]

Right? I'm the same way. [... oh yeah...] I'm Akira, by the way. Kurusu Akira.
fullmoonfool: (Happy)

[personal profile] fullmoonfool 2018-09-11 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds like I should get used to thinking of strange as something other than what I know it.

[She laughs a little at herself. Sometimes it's the only thing you can do]

It's nice to meet you! I'm Minako, Arisato Minako.
hairpincurves: ('cuz for every broken promise)

[personal profile] hairpincurves 2018-09-11 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
That may be for the best... At least you've having less weird of a time than when I came in.

[She snickers a little.]

Likewise, Arisato-san. [Arisato, though... she'll just tuck that away to think on later.] The group I came here with has a base camp not far from here, I can lead you there?
fullmoonfool: (Happy)

[personal profile] fullmoonfool 2018-09-11 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Do I dare ask?

That'd be good, I'm still not sure how to get out of here yet. I think I've been stuck in the mines for a few hours now. [A little sheepish. She misses having Fuuka around]
hairpincurves: (are you in the shadows?)

[personal profile] hairpincurves 2018-09-11 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
I pretty much got dumped in the ocean and turned into a mermaid. ... That's still probably the weirdest thing that's happened to me here, honestly.

Well, the good news is you're almost out. At least you've made your way close to the exit instead of wandering deeper in. [She'll indicate the way out and start walking that way, moving as carefully as she can.]
fullmoonfool: (Thinking)

[personal profile] fullmoonfool 2018-09-11 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
...that is weird. But it would be kind of cool too.

[It sounds fun, if she's honest, but then Minako is weird like that]

I think I wandered deeper in initially. There's a cave down there that full of plants and light. [Minako follows, giving the crystals a bit of a wide berth] But I'll be glad to be out. I miss the sunlight after not being in it for awhile.
hairpincurves: ('cuz for every broken promise)

[personal profile] hairpincurves 2018-09-11 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Right? I think the place still does it if you wanna check it out sometime.

Oh, there is? That sounds really nice... Maybe I'll check it out later... We're out of luck on sunlight for a while though, it's either raining or gearing up to.
fullmoonfool: (Happy)

[personal profile] fullmoonfool 2018-09-11 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
I might have to, that sounds like fun.

[She'd have to be careful, since she's pretty sure her Evoker might not work underwater, but if there wasn't any danger...]

It's really nice, I liked it down there. I don't mind rain either, though. Anything that's just...outside, is nice.

[You learned to appreciate outside a lot more after spending awhile inside Tartarus]
hairpincurves: (so look inside the mirror)

[personal profile] hairpincurves 2018-09-11 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
Outside is really nice.

There's a research station where everyone dragged through Fissures have been staying, it's right by a couple of beaches. It's pretty amazing.
fullmoonfool: (Happy)

[personal profile] fullmoonfool 2018-09-11 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Oh that sounds really nice. Makes me think of the vacation my friends and I took to Yakushima, we stayed by the beach. [She smiles at the memories.

Then laughs at a thought]
Though I will admit it'll be strange to have that and not know that somewhere Junpei-kun is hitting on every girl he sees.
hairpincurves: ('cuz for every broken promise)

[personal profile] hairpincurves 2018-09-11 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's wonderful. It's nice to have the ocean nearby when the weather heats up, that's for sure...

[She chuckles a little.]

Thinks of himself as a ladies' man, does he?
fullmoonfool: (Happy)

[personal profile] fullmoonfool 2018-09-11 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
Gosh, having the ocean right there when it starts becoming summer...I'll never adjust to home again.

[Even if. Summer isn't likely to be a thing. But she ignores that thought]

He thinks he is, but I don't think he's managed it yet. Junpei-kun is all jokes and attempted smooth talk. [Still, Minako smiles. She knows Junpei better now, and he's a good friend]
hairpincurves: (so look inside the mirror)

[personal profile] hairpincurves 2018-09-11 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Right? I'm totally ruined for when I go home too.

[She laughs a little at the description.]

Sounds like a guy I wouldn't mind hanging out with.
fullmoonfool: (Happy)

[personal profile] fullmoonfool 2018-09-11 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe I can convince Mitsuru-senpai to take us all back to Yakushima next summer...

[A little wistfully. She can dream]

He's a good guy, even if he's a little dumb sometimes. And a very good friend. He helped me out when there was someone taking photos of me during school and putting them online. I told him not to worry about it, but he insisted.
