TEST DRIVE 006

Hello and welcome to Phantasmal Rift's Test Drive Meme!

Test drive threads are assumed to be game canon for accepted characters unless otherwise noted, so don't feel like you'll have to introduce yourself a second time to everyone you meet! As an added bonus, participation in the test drive comes with the chance to earn up to two items of loot for your trouble! Characters who are accepted can earn one item for having a top level, and one for tagging out to someone else's top level! Your SWEET LOOT will be included with your acceptance notice.

Additionally, characters currently in game can earn themselves a piece of bonus loot for the dungeon by tagging people's top-levels on the test drive! Existing characters get their bonus loot along with the rest of their loot at the conclusion of the dungeon.

This test drive takes place in the Telovia Mines, an extremely abandoned magical crystal mine and the town and infrastructure that one supported it. The tunnels are in reasonably good condition and would be reasonably navigable... Except for one thing.

ONE MINOR THING

The magical effects of the Fissure cause those within it to lose something when they arrive - for most people, it's a sense such as touch or hearing, but it's also possible to lose a more esoteric sense (such as your sense of balance or temperature, but NOT things like "sense of morals" or "sense of style"), the ability to speak, or the ability to recognize faces. As a general guideline, whatever characters lose should be non-supernatural in nature, and something they would have taken for granted as a part of their ability to function.

ODDS AND ENDS

Just because the mines are empty of people doesn't mean that they've gone still. While for the most part, the carts full of crystals remain in one place, the huge amount of magic has left more than a few of the miners' abandoned tools still going through their motions. Rusted pickaxes swing at the walls, and dead lanterns swing from the ceiling. Crystals occasionally free themselves from shards of rock to pile into bins, which then empty into already-overflowing mine carts.

As long as you leave them to their jobs, everything will be fine. If you try to stop the tools (and it is the tools themselves, for anyone who might be looking for ghosts) from doing their jobs, they'll chase you down until you leave their general vicinity.

Of course, the eternally working tools don't care much about the structural integrity of the mine tunnels...

THEY ALL PILE UP

...And so, inevitably, there are cave-ins.

Most of them are fairly minor, and you can see them (well, if you can see) enough to just work around them. Some of them are big enough that you're going to have to dig through them first, if you can.

And then there's the handful that block passages entirely. But don't panic! The tunnels are designed around the possibility of this happening - rather than coming to an end, the majority of them loop back around to the main arteries of the mine.

E... ventually...

But you and whoever is stuck with you on this side of the cave-in might be wandering for quite a while before you get there. Hopefully one of you still has a sense of direction, assuming either of you ever had one in the first place.

She tilted her head slightly. There are no phones in Hallownest.

"Can you?"

"Yeah! One sec."

Minako pulls her mobile out of her pocked and flicks it open, finding a picture of town that she'd taken from the top of the school once. Once she finds it, she turns the phone around so Hornet can see. "My phone can take pictures of places, so I can show people things that I've seen later. This is the town I live in."

((OOC: Just in case it's needed, bird eye view as a reference. The school is the top right building in the orange section of the island))

Hornet leaned forwards, curious what manner of device this creature had. She resisted the urge to poke it, half afraid her finger would simply pass through it into the world depicted within.

"On the surface, then? A very different land."

"Yeah, humans don't tend to do very well underground. Sometimes people go underground to mine for minerals for work, but we live above ground."

She tilts her head to one side. "What is your home like?"

"As I said, it was the greatest kingdom in all the world, once. Even we lived on the surface, then. White towers reached into the sky, while below crowds thronged through glittering streets. The City of Tears beat with the pulse of commerce and industry."

She sighed. "That was when I was a child. Then, the infection came. We tried to hold it back, but in time they were all driven mad. It is only through sheer stubbornness I retained my sense of self. Now no one lives there but the mad and the desperate."

Minako lets her imagination take over, though she can only wonder what the people must've been like. Did they all look like Hornet, or were they other shapes too?

"It sounds like it would've been a wonderful place, in its prime. It's sad to hear, that it fell to the infection." She looks down a little, thinking on it. "You must be very strong, to hold on to yourself despite it all."

It makes her think of the Apathy Syndrome, and what was to come. Would her home fall the same way?

"Not strong enough."

She sighed, less dramatically this time. "Would that I could have shown it to you. Unfortunately, we have no artifacts like that one you hold in our hand."

She has to smile softly at that. Minako can understand that kind of thinking.

"That's too bad...I would've liked to have seen it." She looks over the picture of her home again, before close her mobile and putting it away.

"Ah, but I've been a little rude, haven't I? I haven't introduced myself." She laughs softly at herself, rubbing her neck. "My name's Minako. Minako Arisato."

She dipped her head politely. "Well met Minako Arisato. I am Hornet, guardian of Hallownest's ruins."
fullmoonfool: (Happy)

[personal profile] fullmoonfool 2018-09-13 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
"It's nice to meet you, Hornet." Minako nods as well, holding off on the honorifics for the moment. She has a feeling they'd just confuse Hornet.

"Likewise."

They probably would. Hornet hesitated for a moment, before continuing. "Can I ask you a potentially impolite question, Minako Arisato?"
fullmoonfool: (???)

[personal profile] fullmoonfool 2018-09-13 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
"You can call me just Minako. And sure." She tilts her head curiously. She's used to weird and occasionally impolite questions.

"Minako then."

She tilted her head the other way. "What...are you? You're not a bug, nor a fungus, nor a plant. You're not a creature of the void. But you're clearly still a person, of some manner."
fullmoonfool: (Thinking)

[personal profile] fullmoonfool 2018-09-13 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's. Probably a question she should've expected, since Minako had been wondering what Hornet herself was.

"I think that's a fair question to ask. I'm a human. Humans are a type of mammal, rather than a bug or plant."

[personal profile] needleandsilk 2018-09-13 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
"A human. A whole manner of animal that I have never seen before. Incredible..."

She reached over and, if allowed, poked Minako on the arm with a chitinous finger. The human's skin looked absurdly soft and flexible. It was a miracle she could survive without a shell.

Minako lets her arm be poked, not minding. "We have that in common. I don't think I've seen any like you before. Humans are the only creatures that are people on my world."
