TEST DRIVE 001

Hello, and welcome to the first test drive for Phantasmal Rift!

Test drive threads are assumed to be game canon for accepted characters unless otherwise noted, so don't feel like you'll have to introduce yourself a second time to everyone you meet! As an added bonus, participation in the test drive comes with the chance to earn up to two items of loot for your trouble! Characters who are accepted can earn one item for having a top level, and one for tagging out to someone else's top level! Your SWEET LOOT will be included with your acceptance notice.

(In the future, characters who are in-game can also earn themselves an extra item of loot for tagging in to top levels on the test drive, to be distributed with the rest of their loot upon dungeon completion.)

This first test drive is based in the Fissure nearest to the Station, and comes with three potential options, all with a distinctly watery bent -

OPTION 1: MAROONED

Hey, uh... What's that maroon film distorting your vision? And how did you get on this beach, anyway?
So long as the sun is shining, there doesn't seem to be a problem out here on the beach, aside from the strange maroon tint to everything. But when clouds pass over, the tint grows darker, and darker, and the water grows redder, and redder...

That... can't be blood, can it?

Characters who remain beneath the patchy cloud cover will find themselves filled with increasing anxiety that the ocean is made of blood, until either the cloud passes or they check the water for themselves. The bad news is, that while it isn't actually an ocean of blood, contact with the red water will drain characters of energy very rapidly, causing sudden fits of exhaustion as though they were suffering from anemia. By itself, this isn't particularly dangerous...

...Except that the return of the sun doesn't mean the return of that lost energy, and if you've waded out too far, the shifting sand and pull of the waves underfoot can easily pull you down and under.

OPTION 2: LANDSHARK

You really hope that isn't a shark fin moving through the sand. That's just not possible, right?

(Yes, yes it is.)

Landsharks are amphibious, predatory creatures just as at home in the sand as below the waves, and always hungry. They track their prey via disturbances in the sand or water, but fortunately, you can track them the same way - they're large enough to be easily visible in the relatively clear waters near the beach, and their bulk causes a patch of shifting sand above them as they roam for more terrestrial prey.

As a result, they're most dangerous near the waterline, where the shifting sand is hard to see due to the motion of the waves (though they can, of course, pop up further up the beach). Fortunately, they're not large enough to swallow a person whole. Unfortunately, they're still between nine and twelve feet long depending on the individual and easily large enough to take a good chunk out of you.

Like any other shark, they're vulnerable to being sliced open with something sharp, kicked in the gills, or punched in the snout to establish dominance. On the magical end, they have a particular weakness to electricity.

On the bright side, if you're hungry enough, the landsharks are very edible once cooked (or, you know, if you like sushi). For some reason, the meat tastes faintly of chocolate...?

Drops: Meat, shark teeth, candygrams.

OPTION 3: JUST IN TIDE

A bit further down from the beach, the water comes up to the base of the rocky cliffs, leaving numerous nooks and crannies to climb over and explore. In fact, they're practically begging for it.

What might you find? Well, there's the usual beach refuse, for a start - sand, seaweed, shells and fragments of shells, and big barnacles and mussels tucked into the cracks. However, other debris finds its way into the cracks, ocean-going refuse from a thousand worlds... There's also a number of pointy blue-green crystals that tingle to the touch and remain wet no matter how characters attempt to dry them.

And finally, there's a bunch of bottle crabs - overlarge hermit crabs that look more at home in half-broken beer bottles or soda cans at their size than they do in shells (though they'll live in anything that seems protective enough - the largest seem prone to making their homes in rusty helmets). The crabs are not aggressive unless you harass them first, but they can give a nasty pinch if provoked.

...Did you lose track of time out there among the rocks, or did time lose track of you?

Either way, you're now stuck out as the tide comes in. If you can swim, good for you! You probably won't have too much of a problem, at least once you're far enough from the rocks that you aren't at risk of getting thrown against them and having some important swimming limb broken...

On second thought, maybe it's better to stay here and wait it out, whether you can swim or not. Hope you're ready for a couple hours stuck on a rock with some weird-looking, too-big hermit crabs and...

Who is this other person, anyway?

[Izunia's not the only one gathering crystals. Soma has plucked up a few as well, trying to figure out if they're producing actual water, if it's fresh, and if it can be used to fill a canteen. That would be handy since his is empty.

He looks up from his idle wandering and gathering just in time to avoid entering the taller man's personal space. He did catch some of the muttering... is this person familiar with magic, then?]

Oops, sorry. Didn't mean to intrude. Guess I'm not the only explorer here.
founderinglight: ([sketchyplaceholder])

soma what color are your eyes rn

[personal profile] founderinglight 2018-02-09 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
[Soma gets a casual wave before Izunia even looks up in his direction; he's currently intent on doing something with the water crystals and a frost-covered vial.]

Explorer isn't exactly the word I'd use, but we don't seem to have much else in the way of options today. Don't concern yourself; I'm not doing anything so important that I'll neglect company.
power_of_dominance: (No one can break me without my consent)

Silver gray! He's in calm and controlled mode.

[personal profile] power_of_dominance 2018-02-09 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Works for me. Just watch out for the sharks. I had to shoot one earlier.

[He peers closely at the odd vial, his senses trying to pick up on traces of mana. Even if it's magic, it might not be of a kind with which he's familiar.]

What are you doing, exactly?
founderinglight: ([hold])

OH GOOD no shocked anxiety dads today

[personal profile] founderinglight 2018-02-09 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, they're no concern for the likes of me.

[It's definitely some kind of magical energy, and significantly more concentrated than the little water crystals.

Izunia does glance up, then, and waves the young man over. If he finds anything intimidating about the aura, he doesn't show it.]

Just experimenting for now. Seeing if there's any kind of reaction from combining the two - pity I don't have a lightning flask on me at the moment.
power_of_dominance: (Walking in beauty like the night)

Yeah, no daemon eyes right now

[personal profile] power_of_dominance 2018-02-09 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
You need lightning? I can provide that if you want to show me where to aim.

[Soma approaches, dropping a couple of smaller crystals into his canteen and capping it before stowing it in his pack.]

I'm Soma, by the way.
founderinglight: ([late with spacebucks])

[personal profile] founderinglight 2018-02-09 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
... Sounds a bit uncontrolled for my purposes.

[At least it's an amused sort of reply.]

Izunia. A pleasure, or at least close enough to one. Don't stand on ceremony, seat yourself if you want.
power_of_dominance: (Even a stern heart can be gentle)

[personal profile] power_of_dominance 2018-02-09 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
I've got better control than you might think. Probably still a good idea to stand back, though, so if you change your mind I'm willing to try.

[Soma offers Izunia a small smile and parks himself next to the man.]

And yeah, it's a pleasure given the circumstances. I think you're probably better company than what I was dealing with before I was dragged here.
founderinglight: ([late with spacebucks])

[personal profile] founderinglight 2018-02-09 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
And therein lies the problem - the amounts of energy in these - [He lifts and tosses one of the water crystals in one hand.] - is so small that I need to be quite close to observe it.

[He's not going to address the other remark, because really, his previous company is not something he wants to try to explain right now. Very boring, being one of many kings in a ring.]
power_of_dominance: (Even human souls bend to me sometimes)

[personal profile] power_of_dominance 2018-02-09 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Let me try something.

[Soma holds out a hand, concentrating. Normally he'd just unleash the full might of Lightning Doll, but this time he coaxes it to behave, ready to wrangle it into greater submission if need be. Blue-white electricity crackles around his fingertips.]

Drop it into my palm and don't touch it until I shut off the juice.
founderinglight: ([sketchyplaceholder])

[personal profile] founderinglight 2018-02-09 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
...As they say, bombs away.

[Yeah, he doesn't need the warning not to touch, though Soma will probably note that Izunia has a bit less fear of the controlled lightning than the average person might. He looks more curious than anything.

The crystal he drops into Soma's palm sizzles with the electricity, a small cloud of steam rising from it.]

...Hmm. Not quite the same reaction as actual water, but consistent with what I was getting from the ice.
power_of_dominance: (Light reincarnated from a dark soul)

[personal profile] power_of_dominance 2018-02-09 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
[Soma sends the Soul back into dormancy, the electricity fading with a last faint snap. He rolls the stone in his palm for a moment before handing it back to Izunia.]

If it's potable water, maybe we can use them to keep canteens filled. I'll have to see what happens with the one I dropped in my canteen.
founderinglight: ([sketchyplaceholder])

[personal profile] founderinglight 2018-02-09 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Careful, it probably still has a charge.

[Not that he thinks the boy is likely to harm himself, but even so. Izunia takes the crystal and - yes, it sparks once, briefly, between his fingers, before he draws the remaining lightning energy out of it, a purple spark that traces down his wrist and vanishes.]

I don't think there's a way to actually turn them into water, at least right now. Once I figure out how to manipulate the energy, perhaps.
power_of_dominance: (No one can break me without my consent)

[personal profile] power_of_dominance 2018-02-09 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's more that I wanted to see if the water dripping from them will accumulate. A little experiment of my own, since the first thing you want to do in a survival situation in an unfamiliar place is finding fresh water.

[Izunia's handling of his residual mana didn't go unnoticed, either. Odd how the spark turned purple... maybe a reaction with the man's own magic?]
founderinglight: ([late with spacebucks])

[personal profile] founderinglight 2018-02-09 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
[Look electricity energy is just purple in his canon don't overthink it.]

Probably a good decision. I admit, my survival skills are a little rusty.

[Read: someone forgot that fresh water was a thing because he hasn't had a body in two thousand years.]

In a worst case scenario I have a bit of alcohol, at least.
power_of_dominance: (No one can break me without my consent)

[personal profile] power_of_dominance 2018-02-09 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Except alcohol actually dehydrates you faster. So I'd hold off on that.

[If they can get away from the ocean, Soma thinks he might be able to sniff out fresh water. Right now, all he can smell is salt and fish.]
founderinglight: ([hold])

I'm sorry about this

[personal profile] founderinglight 2018-02-09 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
The wine's low enough in actual alcohol content to last a day.

[Soma will notice that no where is Izunia physically carrying anything that could hold wine.

Too bad about those cliffs, huh?]

In a worst case scenario we could bleed the sharks a bit, probably. Blood's not especially appetizing, but better than dehydration.
