TEST DRIVE 002
Hello, and welcome to the second test drive for Phantasmal Rift!
Test drive threads are assumed to be game canon for accepted characters unless otherwise noted, so don't feel like you'll have to introduce yourself a second time to everyone you meet! As an added bonus, participation in the test drive comes with the chance to earn up to two items of loot for your trouble! Characters who are accepted can earn one item for having a top level, and one for tagging out to someone else's top level! Your SWEET LOOT will be included with your acceptance notice.
Additionally, characters currently in game can earn themselves a piece of bonus loot for the dungeon by tagging people's top-levels on the test drive! Existing characters get their bonus loot along with the rest of their loot at the conclusion of the dungeon.
This test drive is based in the Fissure nearest to the Station, same as last time! But this time you're coming at the shoreline from a bit of a different angle...
If you really want, though, you can reuse prompts from the first test drive! In particular, there's still landsharks around the new area of beach. Otherwise, here's three new prompts!
OPTION ONE: OCEAN BREEZE
The cavern you find yourself in smells of the sea... And looks like it, too. Large crystal formations, usually in blue or a light yellow-green, glow along the walls and ceiling of the cavern, providing more than enough light to see by. The whole place is damp and a little chilly, and occasional pools of water rise and fall with gentle waves - some outside tide flowing in through underground passages.
More chilling, though, is the wind that flows through the caves, never ever quite going still but varying wildly in intensity. In fact, characters will discover that they have some control over the intensity of the wind - or perhaps some lack of control, depending on their exact response to waking up in an unexpected place. Strong emotions of any sort make the wind stronger in turn; while calm leaves the wind gentle, panic will send it whipping around corners and drive already-distressed characters to take whatever shelter they can, lest they get blown into some cavern wall.
Other than the wind and the crystals, the caverns seem mostly normal for a place that's clearly underwater at least part of the time. The lower reaches of the caverns are full of barnacles, mussels, and other shellfish that await the rising of the tide for their survival, as well as the occasional crab (some of them surprisingly large, up to about the same of a man's head), and bits of seaweed catch on rocky corners.
OPTION TWO: SAY NYA
What's that sound? Is it... a cat?
... No, it's not. It's a meowing seagull, for some reason.
Except for their strange vocalizations (all feline in nature), the seagulls found outside around the cliffs and beaches are all reasonably normal. (Specifically, anyone familiar with the Gulf Coast on Earth will find that they look much like Laughing Gulls in their black-headed plumage.) They're normal-sized and not at all afraid of people...
In fact, they're so unafraid of people, that they'll come right up close to you and nick your stuff! And not just food, mind. Anything they can carry that isn't attached is fair game to be taken and winged up the cliffs to their roosts. Magpies have nothing on these guys.
Good luck chasing them down for whatever it is they've taken, or climbing up the cliffs to get it back. It belongs to the seacats now.
OPTION THREE: ALL THAT GLITTERS
This gravel beach is absolutely splendid in the sunlight, looking like someone shattered a thousand stained glass windows and left the wreckage to sparkle. Protected from the worst of the waves by some rocky outcrops in the distance, the water here is gentle and doesn't disturb the beach much.
Luckily, the glitter does not, in fact, come from glass. Close examination will reveal that the gravel of the beach contains an impressive number of fragments of some kind of hard scale - about a third, if one's going by volume. They vary in size from a large thumb-nail down to nothing, and most transparent in every color imaginable. They're quite hard, and more likely to break into fragments than they are to be ground down by the sand.
But what is it that these scales come from? The answer can be found only at night, when the sun's light disappears. Then, large reptilian-looking creatures - somewhere between snakes and fish - make their way out of the crannies hidden in the rocks around and across from the small beach. In many different colors, they glow beneath the waves, some internal light filtered through their skin and scales to make each appear a different color.
The serpents aren't violent, at least for now, but given that the largest of them is at least twenty feet long... Perhaps it's best not to hassle them.

Letitia Genesister | Fallen London (OC)
[Panic? Panic is rarely an emotion she possesses. No, it isn't panic which is making the wind pick up. However, that didn't mean other emotions couldn't do the trick just fine.
Like annoyance. Annoyance and distaste was always a good emotion to have. Despite this, she's still wearing a smile on her face as she very studiously avoiding all of the water in the cave as she slowly makes her way through to the passages.]
Excuse me.
[She is polite enough to those who she encounters, even if her smile doesn't seem entirely genuine whenever she is near water.]
[3]
[Scales. She will of course collect these. She is one the beach doing so once she is there, placing them gently in her purse. Her umbrella is ever-present, keeping her sheltered from the sun at all times.
And at night? At night. She sits in a dry area, umbrella in hands and pitched into the ground, watching the snake-like creatures with a strange fondness as they slithered around. Her sunglasses stay on her face - how does she see with those on in the dark?
Her head tilts as one comes close to her.]
Interesting. You don't understand me. What a pity.
3; daylight
Oh!
[He's just seen Letitia through his viewfinder. He lowers the camera, waves cheerfully, and then runs over to meet her.]
Hey, uh--oh, huh. I don't think I've seen you before. Did you fall in from somewhere else, too?

[Here's someone else improbably wearing tinted lenses in the dark, although Jetshard's green-lensed glasses are just dark enough to render her eye color ambiguous without actually hiding her eyes. She's also quite obviously nonhuman, without being a close match for any of the odder sorts of people Letitia would be familiar with in the Neath; dark grey skin, teeth just a little more pointed than a human's, horns that shade from dark orange to golden yellow at the forked tips.]

Noctis Lucis Caelum | FFXV
[ You know, he got really excited for half a minute. He'd ended up here just after Ardyn had started his stupid gloating, and he'd been confused at first! But cats are a comfort, and Noctis could've been at ease if it had been an actual cat! Noctis stares at the birds like they're something offensive, and then--
It attacks. Noctis yells and throws a hand out, and he gives another yell when the thing goes for his hand. ]
Hey, give that back!
[ One of the seagulls has a ring in its stupid beak. Uh oh. ]
the breeze in ya hairs
[ ... crystals, huh. Noctis is kind of irritated already after dealing with the birds, and this isn't helping. He crosses his arms as he walks through the place; it's a little chilly but it's probably fine. Right now, the wind isn't too intense, so he'll probably be fine.
Probably.
Regardless, whoever he sees, he'll call out to-- ]
Hey!
you know what this is
Yeah, not about that at all. So there is now a tall, thin man, with very familiar looking hair and an unfamiliar rapier that...
Has a seagull impaled on it. Well, they can probably cook that later. Izunia retrieves his scarf and looks up just in time to see -
That's the Ring. In the beak of a seagull, going past his head.
And so, of course, he turns to look and - ]

Rather than approach, Violet just lifts a hand and points to herself in an unvoiced question. You were yelling at her, right? ]
windy day
… no wait is she asleep
Approach?]
Violet Evergarden | Violet Evergarden
[ .. well, this can't be right. The last Violet remembered, she was on a train. Iris was with her and they were heading home. There's nowhere in that setup that explains to Violet how she ended up on a beach. And most importantly of all, Violet can't remember whatever came in between her on the train and her, now, on the beach. There has to have been an in-between moment somewhere, but no matter how much Violet turns it over in her mind, it isn't anywhere to be found.
Well. If she can't find an explanation for this, then maybe she can find someone who'll be able to provide one.
So, fellow Rifters, while you're here on the beach you might spot another newcomer wandering around. She doesn't look like she's going in any particular direction but somehow her aimless striding still seems purposeful. Every now and then, she calls out a name. ]
Miss Iris! Miss Iris, are you here? President Hodgins? [ ... ] Major Gilbert...?
[ She almost sounded a little hopeful there. But when she gets no answer to either of those names, she carries on with her little search, still calling them out periodically. Do your best, Violet. ]
y'know like, nyah
Come back here! Come back with that broach! Give it back!
[ Oh, there's more yelling on the beach now. But compared to before, Violet sounds rather uncharacteristically panicked. In fact, she's almost close to hysterical. She's tearing up the beach as fast as her legs will carry her, chasing after one of those pesky seagulls. If you squint, you might see a gleam of something green in its mouth, catching in the sunlight. Whatever it's stolen, it's apparently precious enough that Violet looks almost on the verge of tears at the idea of it being taken.
And then, as she probably should have expected from running in high heels on a beach, Violet goes down with a hard thump right onto the sand. She's barely even down long enough to register that she'd fallen before she's scrambling back up to take off after that seagull again. But what could it possibly have stolen to get her in such a state? ]
Intro
Prompto, despite not being a Miss Iris, a President Hodgins, or a Major Gilbert, steadies his camera against his side and hurries towards the strange girl. She'd be about the right age, right? He stops a few feet away, looking for any sign of familiarity about her.]

Julian Kinsella | Original Character
[The air was calm and undisturbed as Julian made his way through the caverns. Even if he wasn’t laid-back by nature, the fact of the matter was that he was at home in caves on an instinctive level; that soothed over what little fear he initially felt, since he knew he could always scale the walls to the ceiling if the tide rose. Footsteps silent as a ghost, he made his way through the caverns with a sort of cold curiosity, confused but unworried.
In fact, his expression was so blank as to appear unnerving, but whether or not that was shock or just an extremely good poker face, he’d let the person he met decide.]
Hello. Do you know how to get out of here, by any chance?
2. Say Nya
[Of course one of the seagulls grabbed his earring when he took it out briefly to rub at his ear. Under any other circumstances, he wouldn’t even try to get it back. Julian has a fascination with shiny things, but he’s normally not a jackass about it. Unfortunately for the seagulls, they just took one of the earrings his mother gave him for his birthday and he is a momma’s boy to the end, so there really was only ever one possible response for him to this outrage: climb the cliff.
That would take forever and a day if he tried to do it as a human or spider. Looking around to check first that no one was around, he shifted into his in-between state; four arms and four legs afforded him more purchase and cling climbing, his elongated hands seeming to almost stick to the rock of the cliff as he climbed upward, keenly annoyed. The seagull, unaware that it had crossed the one person present capable of going after it, was tending to its’ nest full of miscellaneous crap when, silently, Julian reached out and bit it. The bird dropped in a limp fall straight to the ground as, unconcerned, the blonde half-human reached into the nest, shifting through the crap to get his damn earring back.
Only when he’s back on the ground does he belatedly realize that just because he didn’t see anyone on the way here or on the beach when he started climbing doesn’t mean no one could have come onto the beach and seen him. With inhuman speed, he whips around, staring directly into the eyes of the nearest person.] ...how long have you been standing there?
[He’s got a normal amount of limbs again, but for a second his eyes were inhumanly, brightly green, and his voice had an echo to it, as if it were inside the other person’s head for a moment.]
2

Villain!Izuku Midoriya || My Hero Academia AU
Of all of the places to awaken, inside a cavern was not one Izuku Midoriya wished to experience. It screamed of a trap since the last thing he remembered was what looked to be an unstable blue version of one of Kurogiri's warp gates. He fell through and lost consciousness somehow. He reached up to feel his head, finding pain shoot through his skull, and dried blood. He hit his head. Of course. Slowly Izuku sat up and checked the rest of his body. No further injuries and all of his belongings were still on him. If this was a trap, it was a bad one. He moved slowly and stood up. He needed to make sure he didn't have a concussion. He felt the wind glowing through the cave and could smell the salt water. He needed to find a way out of the cavern and then he could find out where he was. He followed the wind, walking into it and hopefully toward the exit.
The villain saw the crystal structures and reached out to touch them. Nothing happened when his leather gloves touched the glowing blue crystal. He didn't have any power saved up right now. He couldn't punch and break it to take some with him. He continued. If he could find another smaller one, he would use his foot to shatter it and pick up the pieces. He turned it over and tested the sharpness of it on his finger. He could use this as a weapon, just in case. He continued down the path, following the gentle breeze of the wind.
"Where is the exit? It has to be around here somewhere," He said aloud to himself.
3
Finally Izuku found his way out of the cavern and onto the beach. He stepped out onto the gravel stones and sand. He made his way out toward the water. He pulled his gloves off and slipped them into his back pocket. He knelt down and used his hands to cup the water. A few slashes to his face and rubbing washed the blood off before. The sting reminded him he was alive. He hissed and stood up and turned around to walk away from the water. He found a rather large rock to sit on and watch the ocean. He kept the gloves off and ran his fingers through his messy green hair. The moment he heard footsteps he spoke.
"It's a beautiful sight. Too bad it's tainted by the fact I have no idea where I am."

Alastor | Viewtiful Joe/Devil May Cry
[A powerful and dignified demon does not panic when he finds himself waking up in a new location. A powerful and dignified demon gets annoyed when he finds himself waking up in a new location. Unfortunately for a powerful and dignified demon, the windy caves don't care what kind of emotions travelers are feeling.
As Alastor grumbles and wipes flecks of dampness from the cave floor off his visor, what was a faint breeze picks up into a loud wind, whistling through crevices and tugging at his wings. It's a bit loud for his tastes, especially when he's trying to think, so he holds up a hand and flicks his wrist in the opposite direction the air is blowing in.]
Quiet down, would ya? Stupid wind makes it hard to think...
[Well, the wind does quiet down...but it doesn't stop like he intended it to. The lighter breeze still tugging at him earns a frown of frustration...which only causes the wind to pick back up.]
Hey, I said quiet down!
[It turns out, getting angry at his magic not working properly only causes the wind to howl more, pushing him back half a step from the unexpected force. But at least that brings the crystals in the walls to his attention, and he snaps off a chunk of one of the blue-green ones.]
Concentrated wind magic? Are these things actually overpowering my own powers? Yeesh...talk about the power of rock.
[Do You Sea What I Sea?]
[Nighttime finds Alastor sitting on the beach, perched atop a gathering of large rocks. His tail flicks behind him in irritation as he stares out at the ocean. The middle of nowhere isn't his favorite location at the best of times, but add not knowing where he is and not being able to get where he was by teleportation? Even worse.
He's muttering frustration to himself when the sun sets and a glow in the water catches his attention. Are those...?]
Sea serpents? Huh...Toto, I don't think we're in a superhero movie anymore.
[Okay, he already figured that. This doesn't even feel like Movieland at all...but glowing sea serpents, especially ones that don't seem like demons, aren't something he expected to see.]
Re: Alastor | Viewtiful Joe/Devil May Cry
[It was easy to miss the wing-flaps of a flying person if you weren't listening for them. Pidonus didn't mean to sneak up on people, but for a succubus like her, staying in the air was the safest way to get around - only landing to fight or investigate things.
Like new people.]

hana "d.va" song | overwatch
[ so. we are here. hana wakes up in the cavern, and the wind gets a little stronger. it's not from panic: it's wonder. excitement. daring to venture the unknown. she's also in her giant mech that nearly scrapes the walls of the cavern as she ventures forward, looking in awe at all the crystals on the walls and the ceiling of the cavern.
it's nice and all, but more importantly, she needs to figure out where she is. hana doesn't remember being stationed at a place like this. she finds the nearest person and says with a little wave: ]
Annyeong!
NYA.VA
[ hana is on the beach. she has a controller in her hands while she sits inside of the mech and there seems to be some sort of old-school video game on the screen. she's pretty into the game, and there's a lot of "pew pew" noises going on, up until one of the seagulls swoops in and steals her controller right out of her hands. ]
Hey! My game! My high score!
[ SO. wherever you may be, there's a good chance that there's a giant mech running right at you. or maybe it's flying over you instead? either way, it's pretty huge, so...incoming! ]
nya
Of course, it's still headed straight for her and pretty fast, even at the distance she was from it at the time.]

[So what D.Va is likely to see is the girl in front of her take a huge power jump straight up.]

"Wren" (Female Robin) · Fire Emblem Awakening AU
[One moment she's in the training grounds, getting a few combat exercises in while her brother pores over the books in preparation for the big battle. The next, she's in some weird cave, her lance striking nothing but air. The smell of brine, cool breeze, and dampness of the air hit Wren all at once, and the resulting disorientation is enough to make the wind pick up, which along with the sudden change of environment sends her pegasus into a bit of a panic, causing her to rear back with a loud whinny.]
What in blazes—Whoa! Easy, girl, easy...
[Thankfully, this particular part of the cave is spacious enough that she doesn't graze her wings, but as the gale continues to intensify, it takes Wren several seconds to rein in her steed. Once the wind settles back down enough, she brings her in for a landing. Hopping down onto her own feet, she finally takes some time to properly examine her surroundings. It's unlike any place she's been (or at least, that she can recall having been); under any other circumstances she'd be fascinated, but as it is, she's less concerned with sightseeing and more with finding a way out and perhaps some clue to where the heck she actually is. She begins walking, her winged horse following close behind, in search of just that.]
Menace
Get back here, you!
[Out of the frying pan, into the fire... Or out of the cave, onto the beach swarming with mewling seagulls, rather, but that's considerably less catchy. The bizarre cacophony was enough to leave Wren speechless; yet for just a moment a smile reached her face, as she imagined how some of her friends might react to such a thing. Of course, the moment she let herself get lost in thoughts
all alonewas the moment that one of the infernal birds chose to strike, diving at her waist and plucking a small pouch right off her belt. Snapping abruptly from her reverie and cursing her own carelessness, she wasted no time saddling up in pursuit of the avian thief.Anyone who happens to be walking the beach at the moment may therefore catch sight of a white-haired woman astride a black pegasus chasing after one of the gulls, brandishing a rather fancy spear in its direction.]

That sure is a familiar pegasus. And a familiar rider. With a familiar spear.
Robin actually can't help but watch for a bit, completely unsurprised at the scene playing out before him. It actually takes him a while to speak up--he had to make sure he could avoid snickering too much.]
Do you need some help there, sister?
[He can curse their luck later.]

(Male) Robin | Fire Emblem Awakening AU
[After a bit of an... adventure through some odd caverns--ones that he absolutely has to tell Miriel about at the next opportunity--he's found himself on a beach. With... meowing seagulls. Okay. That sure is a thing.
(Another thing to tell Miriel about later, he supposes.)
They're daring little suckers, too, as Robin's finding out. He wasn't able to chase down the bird to retrieve his belongings before the gull took them up to the cliff, but... Well, cliffs aren't that intimidating. So anyone passing by may find a coat discarded on the ground, with its owner very determinedly scaling the cliffs up to the gull's roosts.
Or, maybe, they'll be passing by and hear someone from above--]
Hey, did those birds grab anything from you too? I can look while I'm up here!

[During the day, Robin's been wandering about the beach, occasionally picking up scale fragments that catch his eye.
By the time night falls though, he's seated himself on a rock, watching both the ocean and the serpents. It's a sight he wishes he could share with his friends back home, but...
... He's so lost in thought, it'd be incredibly easy to sneak up on him right about now. Startle the poor sap?]

Oh, not from me, no. I'm way too careful with my equipment to get any of it stolen like that.
[So Robin, how are you with flying girls, because Aya is definitely taking candid photos of the struggle here.]
It sounds like you weren't so prepared, though. What are you after?

Marla Sanzashi | Pokemon OC, Cosmographia CRAU
That's not too surprising; she's woken up on the beach plenty of times in Waverly Bay, only to feel sand in her underwear and a creeping sense of disappointment. Today's not shaping up to be much different, except for the fact that she doesn't recognize this particular beach at all, and the gulls pecking at the gem in her chest make her jolt upward like someone playing a hilarious coffin prank at their own funeral, screaming to a crowd of onlookers that they're still alive. ]
FUCKING BAGELS-
[ Um. How graceful? ]
