TEST DRIVE 006

Hello and welcome to Phantasmal Rift's Test Drive Meme!

Test drive threads are assumed to be game canon for accepted characters unless otherwise noted, so don't feel like you'll have to introduce yourself a second time to everyone you meet! As an added bonus, participation in the test drive comes with the chance to earn up to two items of loot for your trouble! Characters who are accepted can earn one item for having a top level, and one for tagging out to someone else's top level! Your SWEET LOOT will be included with your acceptance notice.

Additionally, characters currently in game can earn themselves a piece of bonus loot for the dungeon by tagging people's top-levels on the test drive! Existing characters get their bonus loot along with the rest of their loot at the conclusion of the dungeon.

This test drive takes place in the Telovia Mines, an extremely abandoned magical crystal mine and the town and infrastructure that one supported it. The tunnels are in reasonably good condition and would be reasonably navigable... Except for one thing.

ONE MINOR THING

The magical effects of the Fissure cause those within it to lose something when they arrive - for most people, it's a sense such as touch or hearing, but it's also possible to lose a more esoteric sense (such as your sense of balance or temperature, but NOT things like "sense of morals" or "sense of style"), the ability to speak, or the ability to recognize faces. As a general guideline, whatever characters lose should be non-supernatural in nature, and something they would have taken for granted as a part of their ability to function.

ODDS AND ENDS

Just because the mines are empty of people doesn't mean that they've gone still. While for the most part, the carts full of crystals remain in one place, the huge amount of magic has left more than a few of the miners' abandoned tools still going through their motions. Rusted pickaxes swing at the walls, and dead lanterns swing from the ceiling. Crystals occasionally free themselves from shards of rock to pile into bins, which then empty into already-overflowing mine carts.

As long as you leave them to their jobs, everything will be fine. If you try to stop the tools (and it is the tools themselves, for anyone who might be looking for ghosts) from doing their jobs, they'll chase you down until you leave their general vicinity.

Of course, the eternally working tools don't care much about the structural integrity of the mine tunnels...

THEY ALL PILE UP

...And so, inevitably, there are cave-ins.

Most of them are fairly minor, and you can see them (well, if you can see) enough to just work around them. Some of them are big enough that you're going to have to dig through them first, if you can.

And then there's the handful that block passages entirely. But don't panic! The tunnels are designed around the possibility of this happening - rather than coming to an end, the majority of them loop back around to the main arteries of the mine.

E... ventually...

But you and whoever is stuck with you on this side of the cave-in might be wandering for quite a while before you get there. Hopefully one of you still has a sense of direction, assuming either of you ever had one in the first place.

That's good. Caution is good. Pointing needle-swords at people, not good. Also very rude.

[She's pouting.]

Who are you? What are you?

THIS ALL SEEMS AMAZINGLY FAMILIAR, SOMEHOW.

Mostly because it is. This is the second time she's had to rescue them, and frankly they feel kind of embarrassed about it??

They brush themselves off fussily and look up at Hornet. She seems fine, at least, and no worse for wear.

A slight tilt of their head, to the side, inquisitive. Does she know where they are, though? This isn't Hallownest.

She reached for her needle, but hesitated. Whatever this strange creature approaching through the tools was, it wasn't a bug.

But...it talked like a person, maybe it was one.

"Magic. So I am in a fairy tail, then? Will a wicked witch curse me with a magic potion?"

[The motormouth is fine, honestly. It just reminds her of some of her friends. But maybe explaining honorifics is out for the moment, so she'll stick with Enna]

No, she isn't. I'm not sure what Pyxis is, to be honest. [The mention of Star makes her think of something else, but she's...sort of sure that Enna isn't meaning arcana]

She had picked up enough of the lost vessel's body language. What choice did she have, when their paths kept crossing. "These are strange tunnels, Little Ghost. I know not the way back to Hallownest."
fullmoonfool: (Thinking)

[personal profile] fullmoonfool 2018-09-12 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
She has to smile at the mention of fairy tales. If only things were that simple, any time something strange happened...

"I hope not! That would be rather mean. But I don't think it's a fairy tale." Minako pauses, thinking for a moment. "It was explained to me that...this world isn't entirely stable. It pulls people here, from other worlds."

Um... It's a country? And its guardian spirit? And its constellation, if you're at sea, but we're not at sea. This is kind of the opposite of sea. I wanna get back to sea. And my ship. Cawww...

[She's definitely making bird noises.]

Caw, more to the point, it's! It's a compass, or it's the spirit of the Compass, so it can tell me where things are if I use its power. Usually. It doesn't work well down here for some reason? Which is annoying. Or at least it won't let me find Neutrino. Who is apparently a 'ro-bot' who vanished down here. I still don't know what a 'ro-bot' is. Metal man? Armor man. But not a man.

My apologies.

[She...sort of sounded like she meant it?]

You may call me Hornet, the guardian of Hallownest.

[That's a lot of words. Luckily Minako is a very good listener. She...sort of gets it. As much as she can from being from a world without that kind of magic]

I see...I don't think that kind of thing exists, where I come from. Kinda sad, it sounds interesting.

[She does perk up at the mention of robots though] I know a little about robots. There was one I knew, back home. She looked like a human, but she was made of metal. She was as alive as you or I though.

It doesn't matter how! How is waste of time! Drive them off, then worry about how!

[Another arrow, another Shyrack downed. The good news is, her accuracy seems to be perfect. Not only is each shot hitting, but she's killing each one with a single arrow.

Unfortunately, Saggita is the spirit of the Arrow. As in, one single arrow. She summons one, looses it, and has to wait for it to hit and kill before she can let it vanish and summon it again, and then aim and shoot again. This means it's pretty slow going for her.]

"Hallownest? Is that where you're from?"

She's keeping an eye on the nearby tools, just in case they get upset about them being near, but Minako can't help but be curious and ask. It's a habit she's gotten into from making so many Social Links.

"It is. Have you not heard of it? It was the greatest kingdom of all the world, once."

She realized her mistake almost immediately. "Ah, but if this is not that world, that would not matter, would it?"

Caw... Countries don't... exist? Where you come from?

[She's. She's very confused.]

Okay. So this robot... Looks human? Not like armor? Only metal people I've seen were wearing armor. Which is dumb. Armor is dumb. Don't wear armor on boats.

Well, it's fine. It turned out fine, so it's fine!

I'm Enna. What's Hallownest? Where's that? Is that this place?

They glance around, then give Hornet a helpless little shrug. They don't know the way back either, so they're not in much of a position to help. It seems like they're always one step behind, even in a strange place like this.

With their previous route inaccessible, it seems there's nowhere to go but forward, towards the sounds of tools and activity.

Normally, this would be the point where they yet again separated, the Knight striking out into the unknown with the resigned footfalls of someone used to a long journey. But they linger just ahead of her, instead. Apparently they'd prefer not to be alone, though if she'll indulge them in this...they don't know.

They won't hold it against her if she has no desire to keep them company. To be solitary is simply in her nature.

You ask a lot of questions. If this is Hallownest, it's no place in it I have seen, and I have walked its paths for many a year.
fullmoonfool: (Thinking)

[personal profile] fullmoonfool 2018-09-12 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Minako smiles apologetically. "It seems like it, since I haven't heard of it. There isn't really any kingdoms as such on the world I come from."
needleandsilk: By <user name=Rukafais site=plurk.com> (Serenity)

[personal profile] needleandsilk 2018-09-12 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Normally, Hornet would have gone on her own way immediately. But...normally, she was in Hallownest. The great, silent kingdom was her back yard. There was no stretch of tunnel within that she did not know. There was no where she felt unable to handle herself there.

This place, wherever it was, was an unknown. Perhaps having someone around wouldn't be QUITE so awful here.

Hornet fell into step besides the vessel, silent and alert.

Countries exist, but the magic you're talking about don't.

[She looks apologetic, not having wanted to confuse Enna]

I'm not sure if this one...Neutrino? Will look the same. I don't know much about this place.

Armour does seem silly to wear on boats. It's useful in a fight, but it'd be dangerous if you got washed overboard.

"We're similar in that. I haven't seen anyone who looks like you either. We must come from very different worlds."

"If you like, I can show you a little of what my home looks like." The wonders of having a phone with a camera.

Magic...? It's the blessings of the Guardian Spirits.

[she's easily confused. bird brain.]

I dunno either. But first! We should get you above ground. Make sure you know how to get out.

It was! Really silly. And they called me dumb.

She tilted her head slightly. There are no phones in Hallownest.

"Can you?"
fullmoonfool: (Thanks)

[personal profile] fullmoonfool 2018-09-12 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
[Hm, not magic? It sounds like magic though. She decides not to ask right now]

Getting above ground would be nice, thanks.

Oh! I just realised, I never gave you my name. I'm Minako.
